Igor Kaufman 1954-2019

I am extremely sorry to report that Dr Igor Kaufman, a familiar colleague in the Nonlinear and Biomedical Physics Group, died in Moscow on 20 February 2019. He had been in poor health for several months.
Igor started working with the Group in 1994. He first visited Lancaster in 1995, and then again in 1997 to create a suite of PC-based stochastic dynamics software LancsView to replace our (ferrite core) Nicolet data processors for experiments in nonlinear dynamics. Subsequently, he visited Lancaster on enumerable occasions funded by EPSRC and the Royal Society and he published 44 joint scientific papers with the Group. His most recent visit 2015-2018 was for our EPSRC project on biological ion channels in collaboration with Biomedical and Life Sciences and with Warwick University.

Arguably, Igor’s most important scientific contribution was his discovery of ionic Coulomb blockade (ICB) in biological ion channels (2015). This was a paradigm-shifting result demonstrating that ions permeating the channels are governed by essentially the same equations as those governing electrons in a quantum dot. Igor published several joint papers on the subject and was the main author of the Wikipedia article on ICB, but the phenomenon has yet to be understood and accepted by most biologists.
Igor leaves a daughter Irina Yakutenko (a Moscow-based science journalist) and a granddaughter.

Morecambe Bay Food Bank

Calling all staff and students! We are collecting non-perishable food donations for Morecambe Bay Foodbank in Week 19! Last term we managed to collect 800 items for vulnerable members of our community and we want to beat our record this term!

We will be calling at
– Londsdale and Cartmel on March 11th
– Fylde and Furness on March 12th
– Grizedale and Pendle on March 13th
– County and Bowland on March 14th
– Departments on March 15th

If you would like to find out more you can visit our facebook page, and if you would like to volunteer with us check out our lusu volunteering opportunity.
Are you a member of staff? Do you live off campus? You can still donate to us within porter’s lodges and department spaces such as Sociology, Lingusitics, FASS, BLS, LEC and more to come! ”””’
Thank you again for your help! Feel free to email me with any more questions.
Best wishes,
