Physics Monday Bulletin 2018-04-27

Thanks From Stephen Holt

Many thanks for the get well card and all your good wishes, it cheered me up no end! It is now nearly 7 weeks since I had my hip replacement operation and I am progressing well (doing exactly what the Physio says).

Hope to be back in the Department soon!

Best Wishes

Stephen Holt & Shonah Ion

2050 Travel Week

You are all invited to take part in a new sustainability challenge – 2050 Travel Week – created by our colleagues from LEC Sustainability Group starting next week.
LEC Sustainability Group

2050 Travel Week
Lancaster Environment Centre
30th April – 6th May 2018

We need to cut our carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 if we are to limit global temperature rise to as little as possible above 2°C.

2050 Travel Week is a sustainability experiment that challenges you to try and live within the 2050 carbon budget for travel for one week.

By taking part and sharing your data and experiences with us, you will be helping us to:

  1. explore what it takes to meet the climate emissions targets needed to limit global warming to 2 C°;
  2. understand the difficulties we as individuals and a community face in trying to be more sustainable; and
  3. spark new ideas for increasing sustainability as individuals, as a community or University, or as a World!

How to take part:

  1. Download our 2050 week calculator https://goo.gl/DYmjk2
  2. Calculate your emissions using the calculator to work how much carbon you normally emit – this is your baseline. The calculator also shows you how this compares to the 2050 target.
  3. Plan how you could cut your routine carbon emissions during 2050 week.
  4. Act! During 2050 week, put your plans into action! Share your experiences with us and find out how others are doing using the #LEC2050Week on Facebook page or on twitter.
  5. Discover at the end of 2050 week how much carbon you cut using the downloadable calculator.
  6. Share your results with us via the online survey link in the calculator to help us get an idea of typical carbon emissions on campus and to share with us your thoughts on 2050 week and ideas on how we can help Lancaster University support sustainability.

2050 Travel Week is open to anyone who would like to join in. By anonymously sharing your data and experiences, you will be helping us understand our travel emissions as a department, University and community, and find ways to improve sustainability in future. As a thank you for taking part and sharing, there will be a free prize draw for a £50 Virgin train voucher. 2050 Travel Week is just the start – we hope to run future 2050 week events focused on other sustainability areas such as food and energy.

Staff Mailing Lists

A quick reminder if you need to send to one of the five major Physics mailing lists which are:

  • Staff
  • Academic
  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Postgraduate

Then can you let me know and I’ll add you onto the senders list. By default all Admin staff can send to all lists if it’s a one off email.

Physics Away Day

I’ve been asked by the venue for feedback on the last Away Day. If you have any comments on what they did well and what they could have done better please let me know.

Room bookings

Please could everyone ensure that they delete any room bookings that they have no longer need. Some Physics staff are finding that they are having to use rooms in other buildings unnecessarily.

Safety Induction

There will be a safety induction for any new PG students or members of staff on 3rd May at 2:30pm in B24 Physics.
Please attend if you have recently joined the department, never had an induction or just want a refresher.
