Towards high performance thermoelectricity in organic molecules

Professor Colin Lambert (Physics Department, Lancaster University)
Generation of electricity from heat via the Seebeck effect is silent, environmentally friendly and requires no moving parts. This talk will provide an introduction to the design of new thermoelectric materials for converting waste heat into electricity, using single molecules and self-assembled molecular layers. The designs exploit recent laboratory demonstrations that room-temperature electron and phonon transport in such systems are controlled by quantum interference. Results will be presented for the thermoelectric properties of  metallo-porphyrins, endohedral fullerenes and oligoynes.
For further details please contact Harry Hoster .
Please confirm attendance for catering purposes. There will be tea, coffee and cakes served from 11.30. You can register here

The presenter

Within Lancaster, Lambert became a Full Professor in 1990, Associate Dean of Research, Faculty of Science and Technology, (2005 – 2010) and in 2010 was awarded a Research Professorship. He was awarded a QinetiQ Fellowship (2009) was elected as a member of Academia Europaea (2006) and elected Fellow of the Institute of Physics (2000). He conceptualised, initiated and created the Lancaster Quantum Technology Centre and was the Founding Director until 2013. He led the Physics Department to the highest possible scores in RAEs 2001 and 2008. Over the past 20 years, Lambert has led five European research collaborations, each 2-3 MEuros and involving 10 EU partners. Recent industry partners include BP Exploration, QinetiQ and IBM Zurich. During 2005-6 Lambert led a European-level Forward Look in Nanoelectronics and Nanotechnology. He is a former President and a current Council member of the Lausanne-based computational science organisation CECAM, supported by a a wide range of European funding agencies. He was Director of the £4.8million North West Science Grid and a Board Member of the N8 Molecular Engineering Translational Research Centre. In 2004 he created and wrote the Call for the 10 Meuro European Science Foundation, Eurocores programme, “Fundamentals of Nanoelectronics.” In 1997, he was Founding Director of the EPSRC/IOP Theory of Condensed Matter Annual Summer School, ‘Physics By The Lake.’ In 1999, he co-founded the Windsor Summer School series.

Board/Card games evening

Hi everyone, I am currently organising a board games evening on Wednesday 7th March (next week) at 6pm after work for about 3 hours (although people can come and go whenever). We are planning to play a role playing game of up to 30 people called Werewolf, which is really fun game involving roleplaying, teamwork, deception. The game is usually a good laugh so if you fancy a break on Wednesday evening feel free to come and join in.”

Research Software Forum II – 19th March, 12-2pm

We will be hosting our second Research Software Forum.  This is a place for researchers to meet and exchange ideas on using software for research, how software can support/enhance research, programming practices that can aid research or anything else at the intersection of research and software.  This will take place on Monday 19th March from
12:00-14:00 in A07 in the Physics Building, pizza lunch will be provided so please register so we know numbers and dietary requirements.

The event is aimed at all researchers who meet ANY of the following
criteria:

Do you use software in your research?

Do you write bits of code?

Do you supervise people who write code?

To find out more information on the format, to register to attend and/or to give a lightning talk please go to the event bright page here:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/research-software-forum-ii-tickets-43504612467

We welcome any and all lightning talks on any topic related to research and software, suggestions are:

– a request for help with a programming issue / request for appropriate software / advice.
– a piece of software and how you use it in your research
– a module/library/package you have found helpful
– your git workflow
– some software that you think more people should use
– an introduction to concepts such as testing or debugging
– or even just something that you think might be useful for researchers using software to know.

If it is related to research, software, and computing then please submit something – if you think it could help someone, present it! These are not aimed to be comprehensive talks, but to start conversations (inside or outside the meeting).

You can see details of the previous event here:

Workshop on Version Control with git

Following discussions at the first Research Software Forum, we will be hosting a tutorial on Version Control and Git on Tuesday 20th March from
10:00 – 15:00 in FST Training Room 2 (Science and Technology Building). This will cover the basics to get you started with version control, and teach some more advanced features.  You will need to bring your own laptop as this will be a hands on tutorial. The tutorial covers:

– What is version control and why do I need it.

– What is git.

– How to use git locally for version control

– How to use git remotely with github

– How to collaborate using git.

– How to use branches.

– Which work flow is best for me.

This event is open to all academics, researchers, and PhD students. Tea/Coffee will be provided, but unfortunately we are unable to provide lunch.   To find out more information and to register, please go to the event bright page:

Notice of Works; Asbestos Abatement Works

Please make building users aware that, between now and the end of March; asbestos abatement works are to be carried out in the rooms listed below:

  • Physics – PL1 & PL4 (Plant rooms; 16/03/2018)

These works are not likely to impact on users of the building but there will be a presence in the area of contractors wearing the necessary PPE equipment including coveralls, along a pre-determined transit route. Many of these works will be carried out at weekends to mitigate disruption.

These works are routine works and do not pose a risk to people in nearby rooms. Any area where work is undertaken shall be closed off to the public and, as much of this work will be restricted to plant rooms, it is not expected that these closures should disrupt building users.

Please ensure these areas are kept free from use during this time and, should you require any of these rooms in the allotted time, please contact the Facilities Helpdesk on 01524 593333 or email facilities.helpdesk@lancaster.ac.uk to make them aware.

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me at your earliest opportunity.

Interview Days

Just a reminder we have our next interview day, March 21st, the day starts at 10:00 and finishes around 15:45. We will be touring the building between 11-12:30 and will be using C36 for most of the day apart 11-13:00. The kitchen will not be available for use between 13:00 & 16:00 please use one of the other kitchens in the building.

Please make sure the kitchen area of Physics is clean and tidy by removing your pots from the draining board and clearing your rubbish, If not it will be boxed up.

Many thanks for your support and apologies for any inconvenience caused.
