Energy Lancsaer Seminar 26th May

SUPERCRITICAL FLUIDS: A CLASS OF SOLVENTS WITH INTERESTING PROPERTIES
Energy Seminar, Friday 26th May 11.30-13.00, FST Training and Development Centre, A76 Science and Technology Building

Professor Can Erkey (Boğaziçi University, Istanbul)
A supercritical fluid (SCF) is a fluid compressed and heated above its critical pressure and temperature.  In the supercritical region, thermophysical properties of fluids can be varied by slight changes in temperature and pressure. The low viscosities and high solute diffusivities in SCFs lead to enhanced mass transfer rates. As a result of such favorable properties, SCFs have been attracting increased attention for development of new processes and new materials in a wide variety of industries. Among the SCFs, supercritical CO2 (scCO2) is particularly attractive since it is cheap, nontoxic, available in large quantities and has an easily accessible critical temperature and pressure.  Since it is also a gas at ambient conditions, it leaves no residue on the treated medium. In this talk, I will present an overview of SCFs and discuss some of the research projects on SCFs carried out in my laboratory. These will include supercritical deposition for preparation of supported nanoparticles for energy related applications, measurement of frequency response of microcantilevers in SCFs and synthesis of aerogels and their composites for a wide variety of applications ranging from thermal insulation to optofluidic waveguides.
For further details please contact Harry Hoster.

Please confirm attendance for catering purposes. There will be tea, coffee and cakes served from 11.30. You can register here

Astrophysics Seminar – Galactic Bulge – 19th May

Title: Charting the Depths of the Galactic Bulge

Speaker: Will Clarkson (University of Michigan-Dearborn)

Time: 12:30pm on Friday 19th May 2017

Venue: County Main SR 4

Abstract:
The last decade has seen remarkable advances in the astronomy of the bulge of our own Milky Way Galaxy, with models finally able to naturally explain sets of observational properties that until recently appeared to be mutually contradictory. At the same time, an explosion of observational activity is opening new windows on the properties of the populations that make up the bulge. I will present a selection of results from narrow-deep observations from space-based observatories (most prominently the Hubble Space Telescope), which are both shedding new light on the multiple intrinsic populations in the bulge, and will be important calibrators for planned surveys. If time permits, I will introduce some of the exciting new investigations permitted by the new generation of ground-based “wide-fast-deep” surveys, particularly using DECam and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST).

Facilities works in Science & Technology building.

Emergency Lighting Testing in Science & Technology Building will take place week commencing Monday 15th May 2017 from 9am daily. Every month there is a quick test to ensure all Emergency Lighting fittings are operational.  This involves a quick visual test.  In residences, this applies to corridors and kitchens.  There are longer, more involved tests at 6 month and 12 month intervals.

STFC Events

STFC is planning a series of events on Oct 31st as part of an international dark matter day. The events will target both traditional outreach audiences and government to raise the profile of dark matter research in the UK and beyond. I’m looking to organise some activities related to non-WIMP dark matter searches but I know that various members of the department are also involved with dark matter research from a variety of different perspectives. If anyone else is already planning an event for dark matter day or would be interested in being involved with one then please get in touch so that we can coordinate.
