IOP Talks – Developing a proton therapy service for England
Dr Ranald MacKay (Director – The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester)
Wednesday 19 October
Cavendish Colloquium Room, Faraday Lecture Theatre Complex
Lancaster University
Talk begins at 6:30pm, refreshments from 6:00pm.
Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiotherapy that is particularly beneficial for paediatric patients. Currently there is no proton therapy service in England capable of treating many of the patients that are deemed to require it and patients are treated in the USA or Switzerland.
In this talk the development of a proton therapy service for the NHS will be presented. In particular the development of an integrated radiotherapy service at The Christie in Manchester will be highlighted.
The talk will cover the basics of radiotherapy treatments using protons and photons to demonstrate the perceived proton advantage.
