E.W. Lane An Arabic\u2013English Lexicon, 8 parts, (London 1872), IV, p. 1300, <em>s-b-k<\/em> \u2018to melt\u2019; <em>sab\u012bka<\/em>, pl. <em>sab\u0101\u02beik<\/em> \u2018ingot, piece of gold or silver of an oblong form that has been melted, cleared of its dross and pour forth into a mould (<em>misbaka<\/em>) of iron, like the half of a cane divided lengthwise.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>On the perception of an ingot\u2019s smooth form, Lane adds that \u2018an Arab of the desert likened to it a difficult mountain that he desired to ascend because of its smoothness, saying \u201cwhat an ingot this is!\u201d.\u2019 Cf also Kazimirsky, I.1047 <em>sab\u012bka<\/em>, <em>sab\u0101yik<\/em> \u2018lingot\u2019. The same meaning is found in medieval Arabic of al-Andalus; see F. Corriente, A Dictionary of Andalusi Arabic (Leiden 1997), p. 243: <em>s-b-k<\/em> \u2018to found, cast, smelt\u2019; <em>sab\u012bka<\/em>, <em>sab\u0101\u02beik<\/em> <em>\u2018bar<\/em>, ingot\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Modern Arabic vocabulary echoes the medieval in which <em>sabka<\/em> refers to the casting of ingots or bullion whereas native silver or gold is referred to as \u2018a cutting\u2019 or \u2018piece\u2019; hence, <em>qi\u1e6d\u02bfa al-fi\u1e0d\u1e0da<\/em> for \u2018silver nugget\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The root meaning of s-b-k has always been associated with metal processing.
