{"id":121,"date":"2023-06-20T10:05:25","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T10:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/lu-digitaldigest\/?p=121"},"modified":"2023-06-29T13:03:46","modified_gmt":"2023-06-29T13:03:46","slug":"mentimeter-encouraging-participation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/lu-digitaldigest\/2023\/06\/20\/mentimeter-encouraging-participation\/","title":{"rendered":"Mentimeter: encouraging participation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Written by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-res.lancaster.ac.uk\/StaffDirectory\/staffprofile.aspx?id=mtasea\">Susan Armitage<\/a>, a member of the Educational Development team.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Mentimeter is a way to interactively engage a group of participants either in person or online (or both!). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-123\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/lu-digitaldigest\/files\/2023\/06\/Picture1.png?resize=275%2C64\" alt=\"Mentimeter logo\" width=\"275\" height=\"64\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">I use Mentimeter as a strategy to keep participants engaged in a session, particularly to quickly share views of a large group in a way that everyone can see, usually for a follow up discussion, to set up the next teaching point, or to encourage reflection on what has just been the focus of the session.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">I have also used it to gather views after a discussion, which is a quicker than going round each group\/pair in turn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">For generating discussion between participants, this works equally well online (sending participants into breakout groups) or in person with small group discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">I have also just discovered that they have a \u2018Spin the wheel\u2019 slide, which is really useful for identifying in a fun and random way which pair or group will present or feedback next.\u00a0 Previously I have used \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wheelofnames.com\/\">wheel of names<\/a>\u201d for this.\u00a0 Remember to select the extra option \u201cEliminate options to prevent repeated results\u201d if you are using it for this purpose!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">It\u2019s easy to set up with a few \u2018standard\u2019 question types such as multiple choice, word clouds, ranking.\u00a0 There are also templates available that are helpful for getting new ideas for using it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">I use the free version which has up to 34 slide types with a limit of 2 questions and 5 quizzes per presentation.\u00a0 So far, I have never needed more than this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">It is well received by participants in terms of generating discussion and\/or exposing the range of views within a group.\u00a0 It is something that they too can use with their students which has been mentioned in feedback on sessions using Mentimeter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">To use it in a session, it has a variety of ways for participant access: the web address (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.menti.com\">www.menti.com<\/a>) plus a code, a link to post in the chat if teaching online, or a QR code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Let students know in advance that you will use this website interactively as part of your session so they can get their device ready or arrange to share with a neighbour\/group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Make the first use simple and not critical to their learning or your teaching \u2013 you can become more ambitious together as things progress and you all become more familiar with the technology \ud83d\ude0a<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Keep it simple.\u00a0 There are more advanced options and ways of using this, but for me its power is in its simplicity as a way to gather whole group views\/responses and generate discussion.\u00a0 Mentimeter have also collected examples of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentimeter.com\/education\">how it is used in Education<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Example provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-res.lancaster.ac.uk\/StaffDirectory\/staffprofile.aspx?id=mtasea\">Susan Armitage<\/a>, a member of the Educational Development team.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Susan Armitage, a member of the Educational Development team.
