{"id":1038,"date":"2021-12-04T08:16:09","date_gmt":"2021-12-04T08:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-language\/?p=1038"},"modified":"2021-12-04T10:43:45","modified_gmt":"2021-12-04T10:43:45","slug":"lx-proficiency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-language\/2021\/12\/04\/lx-proficiency\/","title":{"rendered":"LX Proficiency: New automatic proficiency classifier launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cam\u00f5es Institute and the University of Lisbon have recently launched a new version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/portulanclarin.net\/workbench\/lx-proficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LX Proficiency classifier<\/a>, a computational tool that supports the classification of Portuguese texts on the scale of proficiency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages \u200b\u200b(CEFR).<\/p>\n<p>The LX Proficiency classifier was first developed in 2013 as part of a cooperation agreement between the Cam\u00f5es Institute and the University of Lisbon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ciencias.ulisboa.pt\/pt\/nlx-grupo-da-fala-e-linguagem-natural\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Speech and Natural Language Processing \u00a0Group<\/a> (NLX), which is directed by Professor Ant\u00f3nio Branco.<\/p>\n<p>The classifier automatically determines the level of difficulty and readability of texts written in Portuguese, based on the CEFR levels. It can be used, for example, to aid teachers in the selection of texts for heritage or foreign language classes or to support the creation of more reliable items for Portuguese proficiency exams. This revised and improved version is based on a greater language corpus and more advanced computation tools.<\/p>\n<p>This important resource is free to use and can be accessed at the PORTULAN CLARIN website, a repository for research infrastructure for the Science and Technology of Language.
