As with many of the offensives that were to follow, it led to heavy casualties for little territorial gain. With nineteen deaths, the opening day of the battle, the 25<sup>th<\/sup> September, was the worst day of the War for Lancaster (equal to the 8<sup>th<\/sup> May 1915 during <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/the-second-battle-of-ypres\/\">Second Ypres<\/a>). Most of the casualties were with the Seaforth Highlanders at Loos, however others were with different units and elsewhere on the front.<\/p>\n<p>The nineteen Lancastrians killed that day were:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-b.htm#83\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Bland<\/a>, 9 Claremont View, Bowerham Road, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos. His brother <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-b.htm#82\" target=\"_blank\">John<\/a> was killed in 1918.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-b.htm#88\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Bleasdale<\/a>, whose addresses are give as 3 Clarence Street, 42 Clarence Street, and 2 Alfred Street, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Seaforth Highlanders at Loos. His brother <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-b.htm#87\" target=\"_blank\">John<\/a> was killed on the first day of the Somme, the 1<sup>st<\/sup> July 1916.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-c.htm#203\" target=\"_blank\">John Condon<\/a>, 32 Green Street, killed with 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-d.htm#279\" target=\"_blank\">Frederick Donhue<\/a>, Wright&#8217;s Cottage, Queen Street, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-g.htm#358\" target=\"_blank\">John Griffin<\/a>, 29, Charles Street, Greaves, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-l.htm#539\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Leeming<\/a>, 12 Vincent Street and 3 Railway Street, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos. His brother <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-l.htm#540\">James<\/a> was killed on the Somme in September 1916.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-m.htm#591\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Mason<\/a>, 7 Prospect Street, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-n.htm#639\" target=\"_blank\">Edward Nicholson<\/a>, 50 Derby Road, Skerton, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos. His brother <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-n.htm#640\" target=\"_blank\">James<\/a> was killed on the Somme in July 1916.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-s.htm#772\" target=\"_blank\">John Seddon<\/a>, 118 Aldren\u2019s Lane, Skerton, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-s.htm#773\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Seekins<\/a>, 9 Ashford Road, Scotforth, killed with the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-j.htm#473A\" target=\"_blank\">Albert Jackson<\/a>, 16 Roseberry Avenue, killed with the 7<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-s.htm#821\" target=\"_blank\">James Squires<\/a>, 52 Williamson Road, killed with the 7<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Loos. His brother <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-s.htm#822\" target=\"_blank\">Robert<\/a> was killed with the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\/5<sup>th<\/sup> King\u2019s Own in May 1918.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-d.htm#257\" target=\"_blank\">Frederick Dent<\/a>, 12 Mary\u2019s Street, killed with the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Battalion, Border Regiment at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-uvwy.htm#932\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Wardley<\/a>, 83 Saint Leonardsgate, killed with the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment at Loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-uvwy.htm#1004\" target=\"_blank\">George Wright<\/a>, killed with the 5<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Cameron Highlanders at Loos. His brother <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-uvwy.htm#1003\" target=\"_blank\">Douglas<\/a> had been killed in the counter-attack on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> April 1915 at <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/the-second-battle-of-ypres\/\">Second Ypres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-n.htm#648\" target=\"_blank\">John Noble<\/a>, 70 Clarence Street, killed with the 10<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Durham Light Infantry near Ypres.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-c.htm#191\" target=\"_blank\">John Clarke<\/a>, 10 Gregson Road, Moorlands, killed with the 5<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, King\u2019s Shropshire Light Infantry near Ypres.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-g.htm#331\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Garrity<\/a>, 4 Elgin Street, Moorlands, killed with the 5<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, King\u2019s Shropshire Light Infantry near Ypres.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-r.htm#741\" target=\"_blank\">William Robinson<\/a>, 26 Hope Street, killed with the 5<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, King\u2019s Shropshire Light Infantry near Ypres.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further reading on the Battle of Loos:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MacDonald L.
