Two of his brothers-in-law were also killed with the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\/5<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-h.htm#451\" target=\"_blank\">John Huartson<\/a>, 14 Albion Street, had been killed by a train in 1914 before the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\/5<sup>th<\/sup> left England, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-h.htm#452\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Huartson<\/a> of 12 Gregson Road was one of the casualties of the counter-attack on the 23<sup>rd <\/sup>\u00a0April.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-317 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/files\/2016\/11\/Farrell-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"farrell\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/files\/2016\/11\/Farrell-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/files\/2016\/11\/Farrell.jpg 393w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-f.htm#298\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Farrell<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-g.htm#357\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Grice<\/a> were both 16. Matthew lived at 6 Little John Street, an alley by what is now the Stonewell pub (shown today in tyhe photograph).He was killed on the 14<sup>th<\/sup> April near Polygon Wood. Harry Grice was killed on the 27<sup>th<\/sup> April, probably one of the many victims of the shelling that day. He lived at 20 Railway Street and his parents were at 7 Ripley Street. They were the youngest Lancastrians to die in the War.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-c.htm#157\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Carr<\/a> of 24 Alfred Street was killed with the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Battalion King\u2019s Own on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> April. He had six children.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-324 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/files\/2016\/11\/Dale_Street-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"dale_street\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/files\/2016\/11\/Dale_Street-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/files\/2016\/11\/Dale_Street.jpg 394w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-c.htm#170\" target=\"_blank\">George<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-c.htm#171\" target=\"_blank\">James Cathcart<\/a>: The Cathcart brothers lived at 97 Dale Street (in the photograph with the purple front door). They joined the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\/5<sup>th<\/sup> together on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> September 1914, presumably they queued up together to enlist as their service numbers are 2091 and 2093. George was killed on the 23rd April in the counter-attack that day. His obituary, which appeared in the <em>Lancaster Observer<\/em> on the 7<sup>th<\/sup> May, noted that James was advancing with him when he was lost. By the time the obituary was published, James was also dead, killed on the 4<sup>th<\/sup> May, probably in the shelling leading up to Frezenberg. They were 19 and 17 respectively.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-s.htm#797\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Slater<\/a> of 11 Main Street, Skerton died with the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\/5<sup>th<\/sup> on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> April, the day of the counter-attack.\u00a0He left a widow and five children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-s.htm#824\" target=\"_blank\">Reginald Stamper<\/a> of 4 Dalton Road was another victim of the counter-attack on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> April. He had previously been an apprentice at the Lancaster Guardian.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-g.htm#341\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Glover<\/a> of 1 Piccadilly Scotforth was probably one of many killed by the shell on the 27<sup>th<\/sup> April. He was the first of three brothers killed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-g.htm#342\" target=\"_blank\">John<\/a> was killed at Loos on the 26<sup>th<\/sup> September 1915, while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-g.htm#340\" target=\"_blank\">Charles<\/a> was killed with the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\/5<sup>th<\/sup> in February 1917.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-uvwy.htm#921\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Wallbank<\/a>, of 6 Edward Street, was killed on the 4<sup>th<\/sup> May in the lead up to Frezenberg. His brother <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-uvwy.htm#920\" target=\"_blank\">John<\/a> had been killed at the First Battle of Ypres in November 1914.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-b.htm#140\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Butterworth<\/a> was killed with the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Battalion, King\u2019s Own during the assault on Frezenberg on the 8<sup>th<\/sup> May. He was the <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/greatwar\/the-butterworths\/\">second of four Butterworth brothers<\/a> to die.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-c.htm#159\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Carr<\/a> was another casualty of the 8<sup>th<\/sup> May but he was fighting with Princess Patricia\u2019s Canadian Light Infantry. He had lived with his parents at 64 Broadway Skerton before emigrating to Canada before the War. He had joined the Canadian Army on the 7<sup>th<\/sup> August 1914, almost as soon as war was declared.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancasterwarmemorials.org.uk\/memorials\/lancaster-b.htm#55\" target=\"_blank\">Stanley Bates<\/a> was killed on the 9<sup>th<\/sup> May with the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\/5<sup>th<\/sup>. He was an old boy of Lancaster Royal Grammar School and was the youngest full lieutenant in the British Army when he was killed.
