To address the shortcomings of public transport, in 2006, the city began\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">the implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system that is still under development and is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">currently complemented by conventional buses that still persist. Regarding the modal partition,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">bus systems (BRT and conventional buses) serve around 18% of trips, while individual public\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">transport (taxi) serves approximately 6%. The private alternatives of an individual nature (cars\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">and motorcycles) serve 13% and 18% of the trips respectively. Among the sustainable options,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">the bicycle is used for a fraction of approximately 5%, while trips on foot are the most\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">representative in the modal partition, with 32% (see graph below), which indicates that a large\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">percentage of trips are made between origins and destinations suitable for walking.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"font-weight: inherit\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2020\/05\/Modal-partition.png?resize=450%2C346&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"346\" \/><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Research on mobility in Cali shows the dissatisfaction of users with the means of public\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">transport available. This has generated the growth of the number of cars and motorcycles,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">which do not contribute to the consolidation of sustainable mobility in the city. In this context, it\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">is necessary to reduce the existing gaps between the investment in transport modes and the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">proportion of trips they mobilize, and promote equity in the supply of transport (operational and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">spatial), and minimize the disadvantages in terms of accessibility that they appear in some\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">territories of the city.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1642\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Zero Waste<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1642\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1642\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"wp-image-4349 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2022\/04\/Zero-Waste.jpeg?resize=410%2C196&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2022\/04\/Zero-Waste.jpeg?w=1209&amp;ssl=1 1209w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2022\/04\/Zero-Waste.jpeg?resize=300%2C143&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2022\/04\/Zero-Waste.jpeg?resize=1024%2C490&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2022\/04\/Zero-Waste.jpeg?resize=150%2C72&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2022\/04\/Zero-Waste.jpeg?resize=768%2C367&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">In 2018, the generation of ordinary solid waste in Cali was around 800,000 tons (see graph below). According to data from the municipality, the city generated 1,900 tons per day, of which only 27 tons (1.4%) were recovered through the recycling chain.<\/span><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1248\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2020\/05\/Solid-waste.png?resize=444%2C194&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2020\/05\/Solid-waste.png?w=841&amp;ssl=1 841w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2020\/05\/Solid-waste.png?resize=300%2C131&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2020\/05\/Solid-waste.png?resize=150%2C65&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/great\/files\/2020\/05\/Solid-waste.png?resize=768%2C335&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The low rate of reduction and recycling, is forcing a high disposal of bio-waste in the sanitary landfill, which generates negative impacts from the sanitary, environmental and economic points of view. In this city, according to CIAT, DAGMA &amp; CVC (2015), the decomposition of biowaste has become the second source of GHG generation.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The Colomba-El Guabal Sanitary Landfill, located 62 kilometers from Cali in the municipality of Yotoco, received around 2,500 tons per day of solid waste in 2018, from 20 municipalities. Of this amount, Cali contributed 74% of waste, of which the majority was bio-waste (61.4%),<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">followed by plastic (18.7%) and paper\/paperboard (9,8%).
