I now apply my expertise and insight to advocate for improved access to modern radiotherapy services for everyone who needs them.

Through my work with the charity and conversations with patients following their treatment, I’ve become increasingly aware of how vital it is for individuals to receive the right information at the right time when making decisions about their care. We frequently hear about the long-term impact that treatment can have on patients’ lives, well beyond the end of their therapy.

I strongly believe that access to clear, meaningful information is key to empowering patients. Wherever possible, this information should be personalised and delivered in a variety of formats to suit individual needs, whether written, visual, audio, or easy-read resources. It is essential that everyone facing a cancer diagnosis has access to information that helps them understand their situation in a way that feels accessible and relevant to them.

This is where informed consent plays a crucial role. By improving the quality and accessibility of information and resources, we can ensure that patients fully understand what they are consenting to, including the potential long-term effects on their lives. As more people are living longer after a cancer diagnosis, it is increasingly important that they are supported not only during treatment but also in understanding their future care needs.

This is why the GRACE project is so important.

Radiotherapy UK is delighted to be part of this initiative as we continue to represent and amplify the patient voice. Our role within the project includes raising awareness of radiotherapy and the project and supporting patient involvement. We have already contributed to the delivery of a successful public awareness event in Oxford and will continue to support further events as part of the project’s ongoing aims and objectives.

Many of the patients currently involved in the project have previously participated in focus groups within the charity. We are incredibly proud that these individuals are so passionate about contributing further to meaningful improvements in services for others.

Projects like this cannot succeed without the meaningful participation of those with lived experience. At the charity, everything we do – from campaigning to developing patient resources – places patients firmly at the centre, with their full involvement in every project we undertake.

The aims and objectives of the GRACE project closely align with our own, particularly in its commitment to incorporating patient perspectives and presenting these honestly, without dilution. It is essential that findings are shared with transparency, and I believe this project achieves that with both empathy and integrity.

The generosity shown by individuals with lived experience in sharing their personal stories has been truly remarkable, and this has been matched by the care, respect, and dedication demonstrated by the project team in capturing those experiences.

We will be taking the GRACE project and its findings forward by delivering a dedicated event, so please watch this space, as I truly believe it has the potential to be game-changing. Not only could it transform how we approach consent in gynaecological cancers, but it may also help shape and improve the consent process for all patients receiving radiotherapy treatment in the future.

I’m Lynsey, a Therapeutic Radiographer with over 25 years of clinical experience delivering radiotherapy treatments to patients.
