Kate: Social Media and Marketing Intern, More Music.

Kate completed a Masters in Arts Management in 2021 and was drawn to the work More Music do for the local community.

What were your initial thoughts about the internship?

I was both excited and a little apprehensive at the thought of meeting so many new people after a year of Covid-19 restrictions. The situation felt surreal, especially since the internship started remotely on Zoom. I felt a bit overwhelmed at first, but there was nothing to be worried about. From the moment I met the team, I was immediately put at ease—everyone was unbelievably warm and welcoming.

Given that most of my course had been focused on developing theoretical management knowledge (and from the comfort of my home, thanks to Covid-19), I was really looking forward to gaining practical experience from an influential local organization. As the internship progressed, I hoped to learn more about how More Music developed long-term, meaningful relationships with the community and how the community shaped the work they do.

What were your biggest highlights from the role?

It seems almost impossible to condense my experiences and learnings from the last few months into one blog post, but I’d like to share three of my highlights:

  • The Girls Can Gig

The Girls Can Gig was a live-streamed event organized by the More Media Collective to celebrate women in music. I was not only impressed by the talented musicians who performed but also in awe of the More Media Collective. Their knowledge and professionalism made it seem like they had been organizing live-streamed gigs for years, rather than just months!

  • On The Beat

‘On The Beat’ is an interactive music class for adults with learning disabilities. Attending the session was an experience I will never forget; it truly reflected More Music’s mission to ‘build confidence and spirit in individuals and communities.’ There was an indescribable energy in the room as the participants came together (for the first time this year) to sing songs and express themselves musically. I felt honored to be part of the session and welcomed into the group. My foot was tapping, and I couldn’t stop myself from singing ‘Bring Me Sunshine’ for the rest of the day.

  • Marketing Tactical Plan

Another highlight was contributing to the marketing team’s ‘tactical plan,’ which allowed me to use and develop skills and knowledge from my MA course. Working with the marketing team on this document not only helped me understand more about marketing strategy and planning but also boosted my confidence. I was encouraged to follow my instincts and share my ideas. This experience has been truly invaluable and has added great depth to what I’ve learned in my course.

Do you have any other comments about the internship?

I found that personal connection is a vital part of More Music’s work, and this is something I’ve experienced and observed firsthand—whether it was meeting the team in person, participating in the ‘On The Beat’ session, or assisting with the live-streamed Girls Can Gig.
