Rebecca: Blogger and Social Media Coordinator at Support the Goals
After completing her degree in English Literature and Creative Writing, Rebecca completed an internship in 2021. For one term, she was a Blogger and Social Media Coordinator at Support the Goals, which she praises as a scheme which was instrumental in her career development and would not be where she is today without it.
What is Support the Goals and what did the internship lead on to?
Support the Goals is an initiative to reward businesses for supporting the Sustainable Development Goals. After the internship, I continued at Support the Goals and became the Communication Manager for 7 months, responsible for maintenance of the online platforms and the social media content.
How did the internship contribute to your professional and personal development?
The opportunity served as a crucial bridge between university and the workforce, allowing me to expand my network and equiped me with invaluable skills. I am still in touch with my manager now and still draws on the experience 3 years later.
What do you do now?
Currently, I am working as a PR Consultant at Aberfield Communications in Leeds, and have been here for 5 months.
How did the internship influence your career goals and aspirations?
It shaped my career goals by exposing me to a world beyond journalism. Now working in communications, I wouldn’t have explored this path without the internship experience and exposure.
What advice would you give to prospective interns?
Even if your internship isn’t exactly what you expected, embrace the opportunity! Stay true to yourself and remain open to learning. You never know how valuable the experience might turn out to be!
