Over the past couple of months, we’ve been fortunate to host two guests from the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics, University of Tartu, Estonia! Dr P\u00e4rtel Lippus visited for three days in late March, and Dr Anton Malmi visited for two weeks in May.<\/p>\n

The purpose of their visits was to develop links between the phonetics labs in Lancaster and Tartu, share methodological knowledge, and develop a grant application together. Both P\u00e4rtel and Anton gave talks about their research at Phonetics Lab Research Group. We learned about the Estonian quantity system, and a pronunciation app for Estonian developed at University of Tartu. Anton also gave a talk at University of Glasgow, and we worked hard in the lab testing out ultrasound equipment and planning future research.<\/p>\n

During his visit, P\u00e4rtel accompanied Claire on a fieldwork planning trip to Burnley Market, while Anton went with Claire, Maya, and Lois to visit a local school in Blackpool. Anton also spent time enjoying the best of Lancashire weather and we walked across Morecambe Bay, climbed Helvellyn, and swam in the sea at sunset in Morecambe. There’s also been plenty of time to socialise, and visit some local restaurants and pubs.<\/p>\n
