I am a Research Fellow in Human-Computer Interaction for Health and Care within PALS at UCL. My research aims to inform the design of technologies that equitably support the wellbeing of older adults, to enable healthy aging.

Ewan conducted his PhD at the University of Bristol under the supervision of Dr. Aisling O’Kane and Prof. Ki Cater. His PhD research there focussed on the topic of ‘aging in place together’ in the smart home with a variety of different technologies including voice assistants and sensor systems. Ewan also gained experience looking at responsible innovation for digital mental health technologies at Oxford with Prof. Marina Jirotka.

My role on the project

I am a Research Fellow on the project within the Design Lens. This work will focus on Health and Finance, but exploring Place and Communication as additional contexts through these lenses. The design work will initially focus on understanding how older adults can be supported through their Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) and co-design activity will center on this theme to build upon in future workshops.

Why I wanted to join the team

My PhD work focussed on understanding older adults’ lived experiences with different types of smart home technology. I joined this project to continue this work and expand on my initial qualitative work adding in design research to better understand older adults’ needs in a wider variety of contexts and lifestyles.
