Trainee Council

Last Updated on 15/08/2024

The Trainee Council was established in 2024 as part of a new governance structure of the programme in response to rapid expansion in training numbers and significant changes in learning delivery and training standards.

Trainees select up to 12 representatives to form the Trainee Council. The selection process is determined by the trainees. Ideally, each cohort and each VTG should have at least two representatives and at least two representatives should be on the part time pathway.

The function of the Trainee Council is to:

  • Set operational priorities which align with the programme’s overall strategic priorities and represent the range of trainee voices
  • Identify and articulate measurable success criteria to achieve the programme’s strategic priorities

Actions to meet operational priorities should be linked to impact assessment.  They may be carried out by trainee council representatives, or actions can be delegated to other trainees.  Actions may involve support from staff.

Initial meetings will establish actions, and following meetings will provide opportunities for review and update

The council meets online monthly on a Thursday.  Trainees will need to ensure they are available on this day when nominating themselves for the role.

The guiding principles of the council/meetings will be set by staff, then developed by trainees.  The council will determine who takes on the roles of chair and note taker.

Trainees are responsible for monitoring attendance.  If unable to attend, trainees should provide apologies.  If trainees miss three consecutive council meetings, they should defer.

Meetings will result in an action table, and a summary of headlines on a central document stored on OneDrive.  The directors will review the headlines.

Representatives from the Trainee Council will also be part of the Programme Forum and Senior Leadership Team.
