Dr. Xaroula (Charalampia) Kerasidou – BSc, MA, PhD
Xaroula is a researcher in the fields of feminist science and technology studies and media and cultural studies with a special interest in exploring how new technologies challenge us to reconceptualise the ontologies and power relations between the human and the machine, and to understand what this means for ethics, politics and policy. After a BSc in Computer Science (Aristotle University, Greece), Xaroula decided to cross the “science divide” and gained a MA in Digital Media from Goldsmiths College, UK, where she examined the broader political, social and ethical questions of technological innovation. Later, she completed a PhD in Sociology, and specifically in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS), at Lancaster University where she focused on ubiquitous and smart computing and examined the stories, imaginaries and material practices mobilised in this particular technological field by investigating what sort of ontologies and worlds it assumes and then, in turn, tries to enact.
Xaroula has taught courses in Media Studies and worked as a Research Associate on cross-disciplinary projects which aimed at designing socio-technical solutions for multi-agency, cross-border collaborations in disaster management where she focused on the ethical, legal and social issues that arise in emergency response and the implications for IT design and use.
