It is a pilot project funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukcric.com\/our-work\/resilient-infrastructure-and-urban-systems\/ipact-infrastructure-for-port-cities-and-coastal-towns\/\">iPACT<\/a>, an EPSRC-funded SUSI Network+ project led by the University of Southampton.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The<strong>\u00a0Coastal Nature Lab<\/strong>\u00a0investigates the benefits and viability of using locally sourced natural materials in the design of locally relevant interventions for coastal protection that are co-created with local communities. Specifically, the aim of this pilot project is to develop an initial understanding of\u00a0<em>materials<\/em>,\u00a0<em>processes<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>designs\u00a0<\/em>for sediment trapping and stabilisation. To do so, we employ a\u00a0<em>Research through Design<\/em>\u00a0methodology, in which knowledge is generated through a reflective and iterative design practice, conducted in collaboration with experts in crafts, community groups, and the engineering team and policymakers at Lancaster City Council (LCC), our project partner.<\/p>\n<p>This website documents the main findings from the project, and it is structured as a <strong>Pattern Book: <\/strong>a collection of design strategies, material investigations, and making processes that can be used in various combinations.
