These willow mounds have been designed in collaboration with Lancaster-based basket maker Amy Gunawan, and have been produced during workshops with residents and members of local craft groups in Lancaster and Hest Bank.
The purpose of these mounds is to trap low level sediments that move during tidal cycles. The mounds are intended to be installed in between existing tussocks of developing saltmarsh. With time, sediments accumulating in and over the willow mound will raise above the tidal level for long enough for early colonising plants (primarily Spartina) to survive, providing a suitable ground for saltmarsh to self seed and tussocks to join together in larger and more consistent patches.
