Michael Nattrass (PhD Researcher)

Nattrass

Name: Michael Nattrass

Subject: BSc Geography

Year Graduated: 2013

College: Cartmel

Where are you now and what are you doing?
I am a PhD Researcher at University College London, under the project title: Thinking through Cycle Infrastructure: How do people use the Road Network for Cycling and What do they and other road users say about it?

What would you like to do next?
I am thinking about doing Consultancy, a job in the private sector of some sort.

Why did you choose to study at Lancaster?
It sounded a really interesting course, and when I visited on an open-day it just felt right. I have been back for a conference earlier this year and it still felt almost like returning home.

What was your favourite part of your degree and why?
Going on a fieldtrip to New York, the reasons are self-explanatory!

How do you think your time at Lancaster prepared you for what you’re currently doing?
Continues to be a big part of what I am doing now, my dissertation was on cycling.  The influence extends beyond just the ideas, to include the skills that I continue to develop from Lancaster.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Lancaster?
I come from Carlisle, so Lancaster is similar to it in many ways, loved the opportunities to get out in the local area, whether the Lakes or Forest of Bowland, when cycling or walking.

What advice would you give to current students?
Take up all the opportunities that are open to you within and beyond your degree, the dividends will continue to pay off into the future.
