Resources for PhD students and beyond
This post contains links and information relevant for PhD students and early career academics. The list is incomplete, so please get in touch if there is something you would like to see added.
Finding out about opportunities
The following is a list of academic job sites that good to register on to be aware of post doctoral and faculty opportunities. It’s a good idea to also be registered for research council and learned society mailing lists or RSS feeds, as these often list jobs as well as one-off opportunities (e.g. media fellowships etc).
- jobs.ac.uk – also has general academic careers support
- Academic Keys – also has general academic careers support
- met-jobs – environmental science and related jobs
- ES-jobs – environmental science and related jobs
Fellowships
Several research councils, learned societies and charities fund fellowships to develop your own research:
- NERC Research Fellowships
- EPSRC Fellowships
- Royal Society University Research Fellowships
- Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships
- Marie Curie Research Fellowship Program
Careers outside academia
Check out the advice on the Prospects website. A PhD does not restrict you to a career in academia (indeed, most people do not follow that path!) and it can be an asset for several other careers. There is a wealth of resource on the web, but also talk to your supervisor and peers about their experiences and network.
