Renee Yeung

In her near-decade of creating stories, Renee writes in English more than her native language and has an interest in having videos aiding her writing. She uses visuals to amplify the frustrations that are common in her pieces and the longing to escape the harsh reality. Having the privilege to be exposed to both Eastern and Western lines of thinking, Renee’s works show the struggle of how to balance the two lives that exist in her upbringing. In a sharp transition to a different country, Renee learns to navigate a new world with the help of her work and hopes to help others gain an understanding towards immigrants like her. Renee’s work in Annual Student Okanagan Film Festival has received praise and she continues to hone her skills through publications on YouTube (HaakMeow)

Passport

There are only a few places where I have stayed for longer than 3 months, and I have to call all these three places home, one where I spent most of my life, one where I am expected to spend the rest of my life and one where I want to make a life. And so far the process has been hard, navigating people’s expectations and my own expectations, as well as struggling to make this new life work for myself. This piece attempts to piece together my hope to make a life for myself and my wish for others to understand my place as an immigrant.
