The AHEAD Immersion Meeting was held on March 15, 2024, at Umar Bun Hatab Islamic School in Madina Zongo, Ghana. The event, attended by over 70 educators, scientists and community leaders showcased the benefits of innovative educational initiatives. Dr Richard Bayitse of CSIR and school head Mr Sulemana Imoro introduced the concept of circular sanitation systems, focusing on the school’s biodigester. This biodigester allows students to learn about waste-to-energy conversion, linking chemistry, biology and environmental science in a hands-on way. Former student Daniel Adenyo engaged the audience by explaining the biodigester’s workings through relatable analogies to the human digestive system.
The event also showcased a biogas-powered show lab, funded by the ACTUATE project, where students conduct scientific experiments, bridging theoretical concepts with real-world applications. Additionally, a school weather station provided experiential learning in meteorology and climate science, fostering analytical skills and interest in STEM careers. Cultural performances and involvement from local leaders emphasized community engagement in sustainability efforts.
Feedback from participants confirmed heightened interest in science and environmental stewardship. A concluding visit to CSIR explored scaling these initiatives to other schools. The event underscored the transformative potential of integrating sustainable practices into education for long-term community impact.
