The 2026 Architecture Degree Show gathers work produced by 3rd Year students at the BA Hons Architecture and 5th Year MArch Students.<\/em><\/p>\n

The exhibition presents a collection of third\u2011year projects that reimagine Lancaster\u2019s Canal Quarter at a moment of urgent environmental and social transformation. Each proposal begins with a deep reading of place, uncovering the historical legacy<\/span>, industrial traces and mid\u2011century ruptures that have shaped this underused district. Through this lens, students propose new thresholds, public routes and community\u2011centred spaces that reconnect the Quarter to the city.<\/p>\n

Responding to the climate emergency, the work embraces holistic sustainable design\u2014addressing mitigation, adaptation, restorative strategies and climate justice. Students explore bioclimatic design<\/span>, biomimicry<\/span>, biophilic principles<\/span> and regenerative thinking to shape buildings that work with, rather than against, natural systems.<\/p>\n

Material sufficiency is a defining theme. Existing structures become material banks<\/span>; components are catalogued, disassembled and re\u2011used. Many projects adopt design for disassembly<\/span>, using reversible fixings and separable layers to reduce embodied carbon and support future reuse. On both proposed sites, students test how frugal construction and inventive reuse can generate new architectural identities.<\/p>\n

The programmes\u2014learning centres, repair caf\u00e9s, community workshops, exhibition spaces\u2014position architecture as a catalyst for renewal. Buildings are conceived as flexible systems capable of adaptability<\/span>, transformability<\/span> and convertibility<\/span>, ensuring longevity in a changing world.<\/p>\n

MArch Architecture Degree Show<\/h4>\n

The MArch exhibition brings together the architectural research, manifesto development, and technical design investigation shaped by an intensive engagement with the landscapes and communities of North Wales. The primary design brief focused on the Vale of Ffestiniog undertaken\u00a0 by final year students, where students worked within a territorially complex landscape defined by the Vale of Ffestiniog, the Afon Dwyryd\u00a0corridor, the boundaries of Eryri National Park, and the UNESCO-recognised slate landscape surrounding Blaenau Ffestiniog. Students developed individual architectural manifestos that established critical positions on climate resilience, social responsibility, environmental systems, structure, and material practice, using these as frameworks to guide proposals grounded in the ecological, cultural, and economic realities of the valley. Through iterative processes of drawing, prototyping, model-making, and technical testing, projects were developed from conceptual research through to detailed architectural resolution.<\/div>\n
A second parallel brief\u00a0 investigated by he first year MArch students shifted focus toward the south-east coastline of England, examining lifeboat stations as forms of critical infrastructure operating at the intersection of environmental change and political tension. Students investigated how architecture responds to coastal erosion, sea-level rise, managed retreat, and the increasingly contested humanitarian role of Royal National Lifeboat Institution\u00a0rescue operations amid migrant crossings in the English Channel. Together, both briefs position architecture as an adaptive practice capable of engaging urgent environmental, territorial, and social challenges while questioning how future architecture can operate responsibly within conditions of uncertainty and change.<\/div>\n
