The Courtyard: Where open spaces lead to encounters

Located in the heart of the Lancaster Canal Quarter, The Courtyard acts as a cultural and physical connection to the historic Lancaster Canal. Working in tandem with the Lancaster and Morecambe Makers, the space provides a platform for future generations to learn about the past and create art that will be preserved for future generations.

The Courtyard utilises the historic canal to create an enclosed space away from the city, giving its users the chance to breathe in a quiet setting. This is complemented by a cafe on the site to encourage passers‑by to experience a history they may not have seen in Lancaster. This is something that plays into the pathway of the canal quarter, with it working in collaboration with the other cultural buildings in the space.

The double‑height exhibition space gives the impression of a larger art form being more human in its scale, allowing for viewpoints from the exhibition deck that would not be seen otherwise.
