{"id":311,"date":"2016-07-18T17:00:40","date_gmt":"2016-07-18T17:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/acadswriting\/?p=311"},"modified":"2016-07-21T12:04:15","modified_gmt":"2016-07-21T12:04:15","slug":"how-academics-feel-about-social-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/acadswriting\/2016\/07\/18\/how-academics-feel-about-social-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"How academics feel about social justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is plenty of evidence that academics embrace social justice in principle (who wouldn&#8217;t?), and also that they try to put this into practice in large numbers, engaging in civic engagement activities on top of their usual workload, for no reward and often in the face of active disincentives (Bond &amp; Patterson, 2005; Watermeyer, 2015), but to what extent do notions of social justice actually motivate what they do? And do they share a common understanding of what social justice means?<\/p>\n<p>These were the questions addressed by our recent paper at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fass\/events\/hecu8\/\" target=\"_blank\">Higher Education Close Up (HECU8) conference<\/a> at Lancaster University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/secret\/iSVDwxGvi2Jzxw\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Historians don&#8217;t set out to change people&#8217;s lives<\/em><\/a>.
