{"id":7682,"date":"2017-11-27T12:12:05","date_gmt":"2017-11-27T12:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sustainableagriculturewaitrose.org\/?p=7682"},"modified":"2017-11-27T12:12:05","modified_gmt":"2017-11-27T12:12:05","slug":"clean-sweep-for-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/2017\/11\/27\/clean-sweep-for-agriculture\/","title":{"rendered":"Clean sweep for agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7683\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7683\" class=\"wp-image-7683 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2018\/01\/1024-Scanalyser-Field-Phenotyping-Platform-DSC_4438-TEXT.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2018\/01\/1024-Scanalyser-Field-Phenotyping-Platform-DSC_4438-TEXT.jpg?resize=300%2C200 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2018\/01\/1024-Scanalyser-Field-Phenotyping-Platform-DSC_4438-TEXT.jpg?resize=768%2C512 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2018\/01\/1024-Scanalyser-Field-Phenotyping-Platform-DSC_4438-TEXT.jpg?resize=1024%2C683 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2018\/01\/1024-Scanalyser-Field-Phenotyping-Platform-DSC_4438-TEXT.jpg?w=1200 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Field Scanalyzer&#8217;s digital array of cameras, laser scanners and sensors provide continuous data on performances of experimental crops<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Agricultural research and development features prominently under \u201cClean Growth\u201d, one of the four Grand Challenges of the government\u2019s new \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/industrial-strategy-building-a-britain-fit-for-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Industrial Strategy: building a Britain fit for the future<\/a>\u201d, announced today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will put the UK at the forefront of the global move to high-efficiency agriculture,\u201d says the 255-page white paper. \u201cOver the coming years, we will increase the incentives for investment in sustainable agriculture, helping to grow the markets for innovative technologies and techniques.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Food production \u201cneeds to be significantly more efficient and sustaintable\u201d, it says. \u201cBy using precision technologies, we can make that a reality: transform food production whilst reducing emissions, pollution, waste and soil erosion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rothamsted.ac.uk\/our-people\/achim-dobermann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Achim Dobermann<\/a>, Director and Chief Executive of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rothamsted.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rothamsted Research<\/a>, welcomed the white paper\u2019s focus on agriculture, and called for concerted action now so that UK can see the benefits of \u201cClean Growth\u201d on the ground, and fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to accelerate the excellent science we clearly have in the system,\u201d says Dobermann. \u201cAnd we need to manage investment in a new way, so that it very quickly addresses the challenges in agriculture and we can position the UK well for the post-Brexit period.<\/p>\n<p>He adds: \u201cThe UK needs a strong and competitive agricultural industry that is efficient, competitive and diverse, and farming that is sustainable \u2013 that\u2019s clean agricultural growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rothamsted.ac.uk\/our-people\/angela-karp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Angela Karp<\/a>, Rothamsted\u2019s Director for Science Innovation, Engagement and Partnerships, emphasised that it is what we do with the UK\u2019s great science that matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a dynamic, new model that focuses on the fuel that drives the engines of innovation,\u201d says Karp. \u201cThat means less time thinking about new buildings, and more on how we ensure the research we do is translated into impacts that benefit the UK;
