The partnership will offer more than 150 courses and workshops in all areas of agricultural production, environmental protection, food manufacture, scientific research and development and associated business and transferable skills.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/food\/about\/staff\/c-wagstaff.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carol Wagstaff<\/a>,\u00a0Professor in Crop Quality for Health at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Reading<\/a> and Director of the AFTP said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u201cWe are delighted to be in the privileged position of receiving a further \u00a31.5M from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbsrc.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBSRC<\/a> to enable unification of the AFTP and expansion into new markets both at home and overseas. Today\u2019s launch event marks the start of a tremendous opportunity for us to work together with the agrifood sector to deliver the skills the industry needs to drive increased productivity, profitability and sustainability for both pre and post farm gate agrifood businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an era of climate change, food insecurity and an ever growing population, the AFTP is helping the industry\u2019s best talent to deepen their knowledge, advance their skills and progress their careers through flexible training opportunities and continuing professional development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a launch event held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geolsoc.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Geological Society<\/a> in London, guests and partners in the new body heard from an esteemed panel of speakers including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defra.gov.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DEFRA<\/a> Chief Scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/ian-boyd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Ian Boyd<\/a>, who spoke about the future of farming following Brexit, the essential need for good training such as that provided by the new AFTP, and the need for some farmers to develop business acumen to face the challenges of a decade of uncertainty, declining productivity among UK farmers, and the prospects without subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>The full speech by Professor Ian Boyd is availabe (from 34 mins) at:\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pscp.tv\/AFTPnews\/1gqGvbQaQMqGB?t=7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.pscp.tv\/AFTPnews\/1gqGvbQaQMqGB?t=7<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 800\"><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">BBSRC funding\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">David McAllister, BBSRC\u2019s Head of Skills and Careers, who spoke about BBSRC\u2019s funding for the new body, and their broader support for training and skills development through its partnerships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>David McAllister said:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u201cA highly skilled and productive workforce is vital for the UK Agri-food sector for it to remain globally competitive and contribute effectively to UK productivity and the industrial strategy.\u00a0 The AFTP, advised by industry practitioners, will help exchange cutting-edge knowledge and skills from the higher education research base to industry. This opportunity to improve skills whilst remaining in work is invaluable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Karen Lewis, Interim Executive Director, Innovation and Skills, BBSRC added:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u201cThe agri-food sector is one of the UK\u2019s largest industrial sectors, employing 3.9 million people, and delivering an estimated \u00a320.1Bn in exports*. BBSRC is pleased to be funding the development of this high level skills programme that will enable the agri-food industry to benefit from the cutting edge knowledge and skills needed to improve productivity and grow the bio-economy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new AFTP will act as a single entry point for all professional training in the food industry, bringing together the University of Reading, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aberystwyth University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangor.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bangor<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cranfield.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cranfield<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harperadams.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harper Adams<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nottingham<\/a> and has been funded over the next five years by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).<\/p>\n<p>Courses provide professionals with the evidence-based skills to succeed in the food industry, covering everything from international food law to influencing consumer behaviour.
