{"id":7386,"date":"2017-11-15T16:10:25","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T16:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sustainableagriculturewaitrose.org\/?page_id=7386"},"modified":"2024-07-09T12:50:38","modified_gmt":"2024-07-09T12:50:38","slug":"jessica-fostvedt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/training\/meet-our-students\/jessica-fostvedt\/","title":{"rendered":"Jessica Fostvedt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jessica Fostvedt<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUnderstanding the epidemiology of fungal pathogens and their impact on seasonal variation in avocado quality throughout the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2019\/08\/SAW-Jessica-Fostvedt.jpg?resize=600%2C600\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>I am a plant biologist at the University of Reading working toward a PhD in plant disease control. \u00a0The focus of the project is on the fungal pathogens which infect commercial avocados, and someday I hope to apply these skills to the many other tree diseases currently threatening our forests. \u00a0Trees have always fascinated me, and avocado trees are an especially fashionable commodity right now. \u00a0Hopefully my research will reduce the devastating loss that avocado growers and suppliers currently face due to fungal rots. \u00a0If I\u2019m very successful, you may never buy a rotten avocado again! \u00a0But I\u2019m also realistic\u2026As an undergraduate, I worked with the algae species Chlamydomonas reinhardtii where I developed a genetic transformation technique using the viral 2A skip mechanism. \u00a0Next I studied plant cytoskeleton organization in Arabidopsis thaliana and Nicotiana benthamiana using confocal mycroscopy. \u00a0From here I worked in a proteomics laboratory studying photosynthesis regulation, but decided that I would rather work in ecology. \u00a0I came to the University of Reading as a new Plant Diversity student, and I plan to leave it as a tree disease specialist.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/row --><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2017\/04\/University-of-Reading.jpg?resize=410%2C253\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Based at University of Reading\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2017\/04\/UEA.jpg?resize=410%2C253\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with University of East Anglia\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2017\/04\/Greencell.jpg?resize=410%2C253\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Industry partner Greencell\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/row --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">Jessica Fostvedt Understanding the epidemiology of fungal pathogens and their impact on seasonal variation in avocado quality throughout the supply chain.
