Sustainability Physics<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Background<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Melissa Lord <\/span>(Ogden Trust Consultant) <\/span>and Phil Furneaux <\/span>(Lancaster University Teacher Fellow plus IOP teacher coach consultant) <\/span>met at an IOP NW regional meeting and shared <\/span>their interest in sustainability. Phil presented the idea of extending his Lancaster Physics Homework <\/span>Questions projec<\/span>t.\u00a0<\/span> After a teacher CPD session, homework questions are developed by <\/span>him<\/span> and then posted as a resource on the Lancaster <\/span>Physics <\/span>Outreach page.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s interest brought the project into the NW as a whole, included innovative b<\/span>u<\/span>siness and<\/span> industry<\/span> involved in reducing carbon footprints<\/span>. Much of the rationale for a low personal carbon footprint is based on simple physics<\/span>.<\/span> These principles can<\/span> influence good teaching practice such as giving Physics a <\/span>context<\/span> and as a <\/span>resource<\/span> for <\/span>non-specialist<\/span> teaching.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Together they formulated this mission statement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul <\/span>S<\/span>app<\/span>le<\/span> was invited to join the small working party to <\/span>h<\/span>e<\/span>lp<\/span> the project <\/span>on direction and implementation plus <\/span>a<\/span>dvise<\/span> how to<\/span> bring in the Ogden Trust as a possible funder.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Physics of Sustainability: Teacher Resource Website<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We aim to produce a website which can be used by teachers in the North West UK to resource their Physics lessons at all levels to increase the awareness of student understanding of sustainability and the research at their local Universities<\/span> and innovative applications <\/span>in industry and business<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main characteristic of the website would be:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • easy to access and navigate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Provide short video feeds for introduction to topics<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Provide easy to access information related to the topics<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Provide a range of self-assessed homework for students which will link to the research at the local university.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Through the website we aim to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Show links between the physics principles and sustainability<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Inform students how to reduce their carbon footprint<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Engage s<\/span>tudents of the research on sustainability undertaken by NW universities and their partners<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Provide a context for physics principles within sustainability applications<\/span>, especially, but not exclusively, relevant for teachers out of specialism.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Introduce students to careers in low-carbon economy<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Have ideas that readily impact schemes of work for delivery to students at all levels.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Engage students in <\/span>data<\/span> analysis <\/span>activities<\/span>, giving a sense of purpose.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        We aim to have a website to for all of this with clear links to work that is going on in the NW of England and with which the students can easily identify, and with short and engaging video clips.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n
