Research Experience Placements with STARS – Information for students

NERC recognises that there is a shortage of individuals with quantitative skills coming into environmental science. The REP scheme aims to address this shortage by offering funding to support summer placements for undergraduate students studying quantitative disciplines outside NERC remit, during which they will undertake research within the environmental sciences. Students will receive a weekly stipend of £200 during the placement.

Summaries of work undertaken by STARS REP students last year can be found here.

The scheme is restrictive in terms of student eligibility and is not open to students already studying within NERC’s science remit (see further details on eligibility below).

If you are interested in taking part in a STARS REP, you must:

  • Be studying for an undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline outside of NERC’s scientific remit (e.g. mathematics, statistics, computing, engineering, physics).
  • Be applying for a placement in a different department to your undergraduate degree.
  • Be undertaking your first undergraduate degree studies (or integrated Masters).
  • Be expected to obtain a first or upper second class UK honours degree.
  • Be eligible for subsequent NERC PhD funding (i.e. UK, EU or right to remain in the UK)
  • Be available to work for between 8 and 10 weeks over the summer break.

Projects are now advertised on the STARS website.
