Just getting started? Or simply curious about what practice theory can do? Whether you\u2019re a doctoral researcher, early career scholar, seasoned theorist, or enthusiastic newcomer, we warmly invite you to join researchers from around the globe to the 2026 Practice Theory Gathering!<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to attend, follow this <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdU7JNkgBqMDGa9O_en9gF1YEnCBP4AZ12z1g3rOJ5Cr-8vBQ\/viewform?usp=header\">link to register<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This informal, international online event combines elements of lecture, seminar, discussion group, tutorial, and social meeting. It is a chance to meet others working with practice theory across disciplines and career stages and, in this year\u2019s Gathering, to think together about where the field has come from &#8211; and where it\u2019s going.<\/p>\n<p>Through the 2026 Theme: \u2018Practice Theory \u2013 Paths of Obduracy and Dynamics of Change&#8217;, the event and the discussions will attempt to grasp how the social can\u00a0 be portrayed both as made of accelerating consequential change and rampant inertia. The Gathering will reflect on how change comes about (or not), materializes, and travels across different paths and scales.<\/p>\n<p>It will draw on the expertise and experience of, among others:<\/p>\n<p>Brian Pentland, Anique Hommels, Elizabeth Shove, Ted Schatzki, Stanley Blue, Thomas Alkemeyer, Seweryn Rudnicki, and many more who have been recurrently involved in the event over the years!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What To Expect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Across two days of short talks, open discussions, idea-sharing sessions, and informal social spaces, the Gathering offers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discussions of core ideas around change and its dynamics, reluctance to change, and stability;<\/li>\n<li>Theme-based discussions related to main core topics harnessed through theories of practice;<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities to connect with an international community of practice theory researchers;<\/li>\n<li>The chance to make interdisciplinary connections on topics of mutual interest;<\/li>\n<li>A welcoming environment for exchange.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Day One | 19 November 2026 | 6pm \u2013 10:30pm CET<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll open with news and ways to engage with the Practice Theory Consortium, followed by a panel debate on \u2018Paths of Obduracy and Dynamics of Change\u2019, drawing on our invited panellists\u2019 expertise: Anique Hommels, Brian Pentland, and Elizabeth Shove.<\/p>\n<p>Later sessions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ideas Playgrounds, where participants gather in smaller groups to explore themes or issues crowd-sourced in advance;<\/li>\n<li>Mini Gatherings, designed for meeting others and hearing about what they\u2019re working on;<\/li>\n<li>Virtual Pubs, where attendees hang out with other practice theory enthusiasts to round off the evening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Day Two | 20 November 2026, from 7pm \u2013 10.15pm CET<\/p>\n<p>The second day focuses on roundtable discussions of short written submissions (no longer than 3000 words in length) in small, supportive groups, followed by informal virtual dinner parties \u2013 bring your own food!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<\/p>\n<p>You are welcome to join us just for the first day or to submit a text to discuss and join for both days.<\/p>\n<p>Participation is free, but spaces are limited.<\/p>\n<p>Places will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
