Tuesday 21st<\/sup> January 2-3 and 3-4 p.m.<\/strong>\u2018Imprisonment and Liberty in Measure for Measure\u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018Be absolute for death\u2019 (3.1.5) declares the Duke to Claudio, who is imprisoned and awaiting execution. Students explored the resonance of these lines in Lancaster Castle, a space where people were held and hung at the monarch\u2019s pleasure in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and beyond. The workshop\u00a0took place in one of the dungeons in the former prison, a setting\u00a0haunted by the presence of those who previously occupied them. For pictures see<\/p>\n

Tuesday 25th<\/sup> February 2-4 p.m \u00a0<\/strong>Shakespeare Workshop: Macbeth <\/em>and Witchcraft<\/p>\n

This\u00a0workshop began by looking at Act 1 Scene 3 in the dungeon where the Lancashire\u00a0witches\u00a0were held in\u00a0Lancaster Castle. It\u00a0considered the idea of the witches apparently offering power and freedom of action to Macbeth, just as witchcraft apparently offered a sense of freedom to the women accused\u00a0in 1612 and again in 1634.<\/p>\n

Macbeth’s crimes of regicide and murder ultimately trap him to be \u2018cabin\u2019d, cribb\u2019d confin\u2019d, bound in \/ To saucy doubts and fears\u2019 just as the historical men and women who were accused of witchcraft at the assizes in Lancaster Castle and held in the witches dungeon were trapped. The second part of the workshop, on the banquet scene Act 3 Scene 4\u00a0took place in ‘A Wing’ of the former prison.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
