Students at Archbishop\u2019s School, <\/span>Canterbury, compared<\/span> Shakespeare\u2019s Hamlet\u00a0<\/i>to Love\u2019s Victory <\/i>(c.1618) by his female contemporary, Lady Mary Wroth, in order to investigate how attitudes to paternal control and the supernatural might differ from those presented in Hamlet.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Shakespeare\u2019s tragic hero Hamlet and Lady Mary Wroth\u2019s romantic heroine Musella live both under the burden of commands from their dead fathers. Hamlet\u2019s ghostly father incites his son to avenge his murder. Musella\u2019s dead father\u2019s will insists she marry the shepherd Rustic rather than her beloved Philisses.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the ghost in Hamlet <\/i>drives the plot towards tragedy, Wroth\u2019s tragicomedy uses the goddess Venus to turn the plot away from death. Students in Miss J. Creaney\u2019s group compared the supernatural characters in the two plays. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

In contrast to the ghost in Hamlet <\/i>who comes from underneath the stage, Wroth\u2019s powerful female deity and her son, Cupid, appear \u2018in the clowds,\u2019 indicating an upper stage position (as was conventional for the gods in early modern theatres). They spoke from the minstrel\u2019s gallery in a staged reading at Penshurst Place.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students chose a range of techniques to dramatize her spatial dominance over her son in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n
