Despite investment in new technologies, the legitimacy and efficacy of actions taken in the name of security is increasingly in question. In April of 2013 <\/strong>a coalition led by Human Rights\u00a0Watch<\/a> initiated a campaign in favour of a legally binding prohibition on the development, production and use of fully autonomous weapon systems.\u00a0 While the line that can be drawn under lethal autonomy in weapon systems is clear, this symposium\u00a0<\/strong>explores the wider field of remote control, and the acts of identification and judgement on which the legal\u00a0use of lethal force relies. \u00a0We look at the\u00a0<\/strong>context in which\u00a0<\/strong>remotely controlled weapons are currently deployed, the\u00a0<\/strong>grounds for target identification (done by humans or machines), and the\u00a0<\/strong>ways in which even highly automated systems with humans in the loop\u00a0might be increasingly<\/strong>\u00a0problematic. \u00a0This directs us to\u00a0<\/strong>the troubling space between automation and autonomy, to understand more deeply their intimate relations, and the inherent contradictions that conjoin them.<\/strong><\/td>\nSPEAKERS:<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
