Please see: <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/ed381b4e0427\/css-newsletter-lent-term-2020\">https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/ed381b4e0427\/css-newsletter-lent-term-2020<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>January 17, 2020<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Lawrence (Larry) Busch\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Lancaster\u2019s Centre for Science Studies, and the wider STS community, have lost a treasured colleague and friend in Professor Lawrence (Larry) Busch, who\u00a0died peacefully amidst his family in Ann Arbor, Michigan on December 28, 2019, from the complications of a longstanding illness.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Larry\u2019s prolific writings covered a range of inter-related topics, from\u00a0markets, food and agriculture, to higher education (<em>Knowledge for Sale: The Neoliberal\u00a0Takeover of Higher Education<\/em>,\u00a0MIT Press 2017) to infrastructures (<em>Standards: Recipes for Reality<\/em>,\u00a0MIT Press 2013). As well as being University Distinguished\u00a0Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Michigan State University, Larry was a Visiting Professor at Lancaster\u2019s Center for Social and Economic\u00a0Aspects of Genomics (CESAGEN) from 2008-2010.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">During his stay in Lancaster, many of us had the opportunity to experience the tremendous generosity of Larry\u2019s spirit as well as his intellect. A true\u00a0polymath, full of insights across an astounding array of subject areas and deeply committed to social justice, Larry managed never to take himself too\u00a0seriously. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">In recent years Larry\u2019s writings became even more eclectic as, inspired by his grandkids, he published the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fk%3Dmite%2Bb.%2Btrue%26i%3Dstripbooks%26ref%3Dnb_sb_noss&amp;data=02%7C01%7Cm.kraghfurbo%40lancaster.ac.uk%7Ce6c3f12512c94d032b4908d7999df685%7C9c9bcd11977a4e9ca9a0bc734090164a%7C1%7C0%7C637146776027717489&amp;sdata=fxt0UVxg7FBE8MsyC1OkGFdUTPXRM6vwA78yRhb4Q0o%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Mite B. True<\/a>\u00a0book series for children. He\u00a0bemoaned the fact that in his emeritus status he was unable to claim these publications for his annual review.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Tributes from Larry\u2019s colleagues and friends are currently being collected at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.frazerfunerals.com%2F&amp;data=02%7C01%7Cm.kraghfurbo%40lancaster.ac.uk%7Ce6c3f12512c94d032b4908d7999df685%7C9c9bcd11977a4e9ca9a0bc734090164a%7C1%7C0%7C637146776027727482&amp;sdata=da2tVgHgzc4ZwW5Hp1PAu07a79wcAezSIV9DGLYZXDA%3D&amp;reserved=0\">https:\/\/www.frazerfunerals.com\/<\/a>. He was a living example of how to be both a brilliant scholar and also a funny, unpretentious, and kind man.
