IBM have filed patents for some new Piezoelectric Transistors(PETs) which are thought to reinstate Moores law and provide a better alternatives to older Silicon Transistors.
This is great news because at the moment processor performance increases are no where near what they used to be 10 years ago. Even Intel themselves are struggling and in reaction to their struggles have changed their release structure from shrinking transistor size every 24 months to every 36 months and further refining their architecture.
Whats great is how efficient they are. Current transistors are relatively inefficient and generate large amounts of heat. With these transistors, they generate much less heat while requiring less power meaning we can increase clock speeds of a processor, thus majorly increasing performance for mobile phones!
