That description talks about <strong>The FLOW<\/strong> as the stories behind the project\u2019s research, written by those closest to the work of the project and to the challenges and solutions associated with the \u201ccircular water economy\u201d. That might still leave you with questions about the details of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/research\/global-challenges-research-fund\/\">GCRF-funded<\/a> project and why we want you to read the stories behind the research. I hope that this blog will answer those questions.<\/p>\n<p>Your first question might be why have we have called our collected stories \u201c<strong>The FLOW<\/strong>\u201d? One reason for that name emerges from the concept that is the basis of the whole RECIRCULATE project &#8211; the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DsgddhGb8Pk\">Circular water economy<\/a>&#8220;. For us, the flow of water and other materials in the circular water economy starts with waste, including human waste. As you\u2019ll have realised, \u2018other materials\u2019 is a euphemism. I can share with you something I have learned from working with my RECIRCULATE colleagues. That is that I can legitimately write about \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=shit+flow+diagrams&amp;safe=strict&amp;rlz=1C1GGRV_enGB786GB786&amp;sxsrf=ALeKk01vldt5yazfd4QAkGpvN9L2MKOxCw:1596644162386&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjCr4aBu4TrAhV3QEEAHSgBBRoQ_AUoAXoECAwQAw&amp;biw=1163&amp;bih=525\">shit flow diagrams<\/a>\u201d here. \u201cSFDs\u201d to the initiated, they are entirely respectable elements in the science and engineering of sanitation. For RECIRCULATE, SFDs integrate with the <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/2020\/08\/blog-the-acid-test\/\">production of energy from waste<\/a>, and new approaches to <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/2020\/08\/blog-waste-not-want-not\/\">fertilising<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/2020\/03\/how-can-our-research-help-farmers\/\">irrigating<\/a> crops. Understanding this flow of materials in the circular water economy is central to RECIRCULATE, but it\u2019s not the only flow that is important for us.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DsgddhGb8Pk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The flow of ideas and information is another key foundation of the project. The description of the project on our homepage refers to \u201c<em>new partnership-based approaches\u2026\u201d <\/em>and establishing<em> \u201c\u2026. robust, durable and equitable partnerships\u201d. <\/em>How are those possible without an effective two-way flow of ideas and information between partners? RECIRCULATE\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/home\/partners\/\">partner organisations<\/a> are based in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biust.ac.bw\/\">Botswana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csir.org.gh\/\">Ghana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/atpsnet.org\/\">Kenya<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncst.mw\/\">Malawi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniben.edu\/\">Nigeria<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/\">UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbu.ac.zm\/\">Zambia<\/a>, but our network now reaches across fourteen African countries. In fact, building on existing relationships the network now extends as far as <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/2020\/03\/blog-fantastic-adolescent-girls-as-wash-change-agents\/\">Bangladesh<\/a> and India.<\/p>\n<p>The network is also diverse in the expertise, experience and activities of those involved. We cover multiple sectors and disciplines. We have administrators, business people, entrepreneurs, journalists, policy experts and decision-makers, as well as academics and researchers. The flow of ideas and understanding between disciplines is essential for us to deliver \u201c<em>Interdisciplinary co-designed research<\/em>\u201d. Even more critical, our aim to work \u201c\u2026<em>with, in and for their communities \u2026..<\/em>\u201d depends completely on the two-way flow of understanding, information and knowledge between community members and researchers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The FLOW<\/strong> is one way for that exchange of ideas and information to happen. This builds on <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/2020\/03\/how-can-our-research-help-farmers\/\">knowledge exchange events<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/capacity-building\/workshops\/\">one-week workshops<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/capacity-building\/residences\/\">four-week residences<\/a> that have brought together researchers and research users throughout the project. These events are vital parts in the <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/capacity-building\/\">capacity strengthening<\/a> that is at the heart of RECIRCULATE. They also laid the foundation for the thriving RECIRCULATE network- <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/participate\/\">PARTICIPATE<\/a>&#8211; that continues to link participants from across Africa. Our sister project <a href=\"http:\/\/actuate.global\/\">ACTUATE<\/a> is a further step in the exchange of ideas with our communities. ACTUATE establishes sites at University of Benin in Nigeria and Umar Bun Hatab Islamic Basic School in Ghana that demonstrate new technologies to their potential user communities.<\/p>\n<p>All of these activities contribute to the exchange of ideas and information within RECIRCULATE and its existing networks. <strong>The FLOW<\/strong> is another part of that exchange. It is also a route that we hope will make our RECIRCULATE stories accessible to anyone interested in the challenges and solutions that we are working on. We can think about those \u2018challenges and solutions\u2019 in terms of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/\">United Nations Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (SDGs). Different elements of RECIRCULATE are relevant to <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal1\">SDG1<\/a> (No poverty), <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal2\">SDG2<\/a> (Zero hunger), <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal6\">SDG6<\/a> (Clean Water and Sanitation) and <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal7\">SDG7<\/a> (Affordable &amp; Clean Energy). Of course, we only touch on some elements of what are very complex challenges. We are especially interested in the areas of overlap between these different SDGs. That\u2019s the circular water economy.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in finding out more about RECIRCULATE then you could check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/recirculate.global\/research\/\">short videos<\/a> that describe the different elements of our work.
