Teacher CPD events 2020 – 2021 at Lancaster UniversityPhysics Department in collaboration
with the Institute of Physics
The success of the one day teacher CPD events that have been taking place once a term since June 2018 ay Lancaster has been well shown from their increased attendance and positive feedback. The classroom resources developed can be found here: http://wp.lancs.ac.uk/physics-outreach/ which includes homework questions on Astrophysics, Space and Planetary Physics, Low Temperature Physics and Star Trek Physics.
The outbreak of Covid-19 encouraged the development of on-line events which seem to be working very well. This is the programme for 2020-21and all bookings can be made through TalkPhysics:
1st February 2021: Biology and Physics: Mhairi Mitchison and Daisy Fox
On-line event
“Physics has had a tremendous impact on biological sciences. This teacher CPD event will explore how teaching Physics in schools can draw out these applications to biology and medicine.
This will be a full day event involving talks, discussion and workshops with researchers and practitioners. The aim of the event is to produce an on line teaching resource for schools”
24th March 2021: Citizen Science: Dr Brooke Simmons and Dr David Sobral.
On-line event
“Citizen Science Projects at Lancaster: Galaxy Zoo (established by Dr Brooke Simmons) and “Mapping the Universe” (developed by Dr David Sobral) make an ideal opportunity for teachers to learn how their students can take part in real research. The day will involve talks from the researchers, workshops using their website and tools and opportunity for plenty of discussion and questions. The aim is to make these resources known to more teachers of Physics”
15th June 2021: Sustainability physics: Melissa Lord and Phil Furneaux
Location: Lancaster University Physics Department but it is realistically going to be an on-line event.
Launch of the website resource “ Homework Questions for Sustainability Physics.”
“Melissa Lord, (Ogden Trust Consultant) and Phil Furneaux (Honorary Fellow at Lancaster University) successfully applied to the Ogden Trust for funds to develop a web based school resource to promote the application of physics concepts which are developing the technologies which are allowing us to achieve our zero carbon ambitions for 2030. Note the optimism! A range of “Homework Questions” will be presented on themes such as transport, construction, storage, heat pumps, quantum physics, and renewables. The speakers will include practitioners and researchers of this technology. This event will launch the Website http://wp.lancs.ac.uk/sustainability-physics/ and is sponsored by The Ogden Trust”
