Shakespeare\u2019s Henry V pertinently raises questions about their value, asking \u2018O Ceremony show me but thy worth!\u2019 (2.1.222-6). Since all ceremonies are costly in terms of time, effort and (for larger ceremonies) material resources, what was their value in early modern society? What affective power do they continue to hold today? And what happens when they are represented on stage?<\/p>\n<p>We have explored these events in a series of interdisciplinary seminars using theoretical models developed in social anthropology, and through practical work. (see past events).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Capturing Witches<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Rituals and ceremonies associated with witchcraft were considered in the \u2018Capturing Witches\u2019 conference of 2012 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first Pendle Witch trial in Lancaster in 1612.\u00a0 Read more on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transculturalwriting.com\/?page_id=1535\">Centre for Transcultural Writing<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>The conference included a rehearsed reading of Thomas Heywood and Richard Brome\u2019s play <em>The Late Lancashire Witches<\/em> (1634) in Lancaster Castle. Papers from the conference are published in a special issue of the journalPapers from the conference are published in a special issue of the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preternature.org\/index.php\/PN\/about\">Preternature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Ceremony, Ritual and War <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/performance-ceremony-ritual\/files\/2013\/09\/Agamemnon-and-Iphigenia2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-118\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/performance-ceremony-ritual\/files\/2013\/09\/Agamemnon-and-Iphigenia2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/performance-ceremony-ritual\/files\/2013\/09\/Agamemnon-and-Iphigenia2-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/performance-ceremony-ritual\/files\/2013\/09\/Agamemnon-and-Iphigenia2-300x297.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/performance-ceremony-ritual\/files\/2013\/09\/Agamemnon-and-Iphigenia2-302x300.jpg 302w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/performance-ceremony-ritual\/files\/2013\/09\/Agamemnon-and-Iphigenia2.jpg 521w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>In July 2013 a work-in-progress production of Lady Jane Lumley\u2019s 1550s translation of Iphigenia at Aulis, by Euripides was presented by <a href=\"http:\/\/therosecompany.posthaven.com\/\">The Rose Company<\/a> at Reading University\u2019s Early Modern Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Its representation of sacrifice, ritual and gender will be pursued at the \u2018Medieval &amp; Early Modern Cultures of War and Peace: Women and War\u2019 conference at Homerton College, University of Cambridge (23<sup>rd<\/sup> November 2014) and at University College London (24th November 2014)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ceremony in <em>Macbeth<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In November 2012 Findlay led a workshop with the actors Andrew Jarvis (Royal Shakespeare Company, English Shakespeare Company) and James Evans (Bell Shakespeare Company) at the Australian and New Zealand Shakespeare Association\u2019s conference \u2018Shakespeare and the Emotions\u2019. A paper on &#8216;Tragedy and the State of Ceremony: <em>Macbeth&#8217; <\/em>at the Department\u2019s symposium with Simon Critchley (July 2013) and a plenary lecture at Aarhus University (May 2014) continue this work.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rites and Revivals at Penshurst Place<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/performance-ceremony-ritual\/files\/2013\/09\/Penshurst-Gardens-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-120\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/performance-ceremony-ritual\/files\/2013\/09\/Penshurst-Gardens-3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Lady Mary Wroth\u2019s play <em>Love\u2019s Victory <\/em>(c.1614-19) will be staged on 8 June 2014 at Penshurst Place, Kent (the site where it was composed). The Globe Theatre\u2019s \u2018Read not Dead\u2019 will be accompanied by an academic conference.
