Prof Carla Nunes (NOVA-ENSP) visits Lancaster

StaffProfessor Carla Nunes from NOVA’s School of Public Health has recently visited Lancaster University, under a Erasmus + initiative. The main goal of the visit was to prepare the kick-off of a new project awarded by Portuguese National Research Agency (Fundação para a Ciencia e Tecnologia, Portugal; project reference: PTDC/SAU-PUB/31346/2017: “UrbanTB – From symptoms to diagnosis of Urban Tuberculosis, considering individual and contextual factors. What are the determinants and critical points of this delay’s pathway?”). This project included four different universities and has Prof. Benjamin Taylor from Lancaster University and  Dr. Dennis Falzon (WHO) as external advisors. In 2014, Professor Carla Nunes took a sabbatical year at Lancaster University and that was when collaboration with those colleagues started.
Additionally, moving forward the strategic partnership established between NOVA and Lancaster University, Carla Nunes met with Céu Mateus, Benjamin Taylor and Patrick Rebuschat to discuss the development of joint teaching and research initiatives. Several activities and near future meetings are already being planned.

Lancaster academics at forefront of international talks about Africa and health research

Ambitious new research projects focusing on Africa and on health innovation were discussed when a delegation from Lancaster University travelled to Portugal this month.

The delegation included academics from Lancaster’s Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, as well as Health and Medicine.

A ‘Research in Africa’ event, staged by NOVA University in Lisbon, showcased an impressive range of Africa-related research conducted across NOVA’s nine Faculties, from business studies, information management and social sciences to engineering, health research and natural sciences.

Lancaster University and NOVA University Lisbon established a strategic partnership in June 2018. The purpose of the partnership is to explore opportunities for collaborative research, joint teaching initiatives and strategic knowledge exchange including internationalisation, staff development and student recruitment.

Professor Robert Geyer, Lancaster’s Interim Dean International, said: “This was an excellent event for discussing linkages with NOVA and good progress was made on a number of areas. We look forward to exploring further research linkages on Europe with NOVA and inviting NOVA staff to forthcoming Lancaster University research events and activities.”

Dr Céu Mateus, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Health Research, Faculty of Health and Medicine, said: “Both NOVA and Lancaster have strong, cross-disciplinary research groups that focus on the use of health care technologies in ageing populations. We look forward to working together on this topic and to explore collaborations in other health research areas.”

Professor Kirk Semple, Director of International Engagement, Lancaster Environment Centre, said: “It was wonderful to hear about the range of projects that NOVA is working on with Lusophone African partners. It is clear that NOVA and Lancaster have similar ambitions for international collaboration. This strategic partnership offers exciting possibilities for our universities to work together on meaningful projects with African researchers.”

The visit concluded with a tour to the new campus of NOVA’s highly-ranked School of Business and Economics. This impressive new development features state-of-the-art teaching and research infrastructure, including a tunnel that leads staff and students to an adjacent beach. The project was financed by a 47M EUR fundraising campaign.

A new strategic partnership has been established between Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA) and Lancaster University.

On 19 June, delegations from the two universities met at the Rectorate of NOVA in Lisbon to sign a Memorandum of Understanding.

A new strategic partnership has been established between Lancaster University and the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA)

A delegation from Lancaster travelled to Lisbon this month to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between NOVA and Lancaster.

NOVA was founded in 1973 and, like Lancaster, has rapidly risen through the international university rankings.

It is ranked 15th best European University in the QS World University Rankings “Top 50 Under 50” and ranked in the Times Higher Education “Top 100 under 50”.

The purpose of the partnership is to explore opportunities for collaborative research, joint teaching initiatives and strategic knowledge exchange including internationalisation, staff development and student recruitment.

Under this agreement, all faculties, departments, centres and units of the two partner institutions will be able to explore potential areas for collaboration that will be of mutual benefit.

Both Lancaster and NOVA play a leading role in the recently formed Heritage Language Consortium, a strategic partnership between six leading European universities and the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Professor Robert Geyer, who led the delegation to Lisbon in his capacity of Lancaster’s Academic Director (International), said: “This partnership will allow us to explore joint initiatives in areas that are of strategic interest to both institutions, e.g. social innovation, digital futures, ageing, and global health challenges. Like Lancaster, NOVA has particularly strong ties to Africa, so this is another area to explore.”

Lancaster has historic ties to Portugal. In 1986, the President of Portugal, Mário Soares, received an Honorary Doctorate from Lancaster University. The occasion served to celebrate 600 years of the Treaty of Windsor between England and Portugal, the oldest diplomatic alliance in the world still in existence.

Last year, the Portuguese Secretary of State for Education spoke at a symposium on heritage language education that took place on campus.

Earlier this month, the Portuguese Minister of Education, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, visited Lancaster University to participate in a round table on public policy and challenges in higher education.
