The \u201crules of the game\u201d appear to be changing, with the very\u00a0democratic institutions that are supposed to provide \u201cchecks and balances\u201d on the\u00a0power of any one part of the US political apparatus being restructured in previously\u00a0unimaginable ways. The response to each new action by Trump and his cabinet, both\u00a0domestically and internationally has displayed much of the same polarisation that\u00a0characterised the election campaign itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In this workshop, we will have a chance to look in detail at and discuss some key\u00a0political texts by or about Trump and his actions. We will examine how the discourse-historical approach to critical discourse studies can be used to analyse this sort of data,\u00a0and how we can link detailed linguistic analysis to broader social critique, particularly in\u00a0times of political crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We will circulate the texts for analysis closer to the time, but in the meantime, if you\u00a0would like to take part in the workshop, you are asked to read the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2017\/03\/how-to-build-an-autocracy\/513872\/\">article<\/a> from\u00a0The Atlantic, a monthly US magazine, and chapter 6 of Ruth\u2019s book \u201cThe Politics of\u00a0Fear\u201d.
