Prose Fiction Tutorial Competition<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you are an aspiring writer of prose fiction, short or long form, and would value a 30-minute one-to-one tutorial with George Green, an experienced and expert university tutor-writer, then just submit 500 words of your work to\u00a0lancasterwords@lancaster.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0by May 31 2017.\u00a0\u00a0 We will then select the best three submissions\u00a0 and the tutorials will take place on the morning of Saturday, July 8th<\/sup>\u00a0 in The Hall, Lancaster – free coffee provided!\u00a0\u00a0Entry to the competition is also free.<\/p>\n

George Green is\u00a0 Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing in the Department of English Literature & Creative Writing at the University of Lancaster and he is author of\u00a0two novels,\u00a0\u00a0Hound<\/em>\u00a0(2003) and\u00a0Hawk\u00a0<\/em>(2005).<\/p>\n

Underwater Beasts: Sarah Hymas book making event<\/h2>\n

A creative writing and book-making workshop for 7-10 year olds (and their adult) with Sarah Hymas. Come and learn about some of the amazing microscopic creatures that live in our oceans, then make a tiny booklet about them.\u00a0\u00a0 Millions of plankton drift in our seas and rivers, so small they can\u2019t swim against currents and too small for us to see many of them without microscopes. But they are essential to life on earth: providing half the oxygen we land-dwellers need to breathe.<\/p>\n

This workshop will share more plankton facts and look at how we might protect where they live. Imaginative creative writing games will get everyone writing a poem or story they can set in a small concertina booklet.<\/p>\n

No knowledge about the sea, writing or bookmaking required to join in and have oceans of fun. Please note, this is not a drop-in session.<\/p>\n

Stories 2 Connect<\/h2>\n

Stories of resilience and transformation created collaboratively with disadvantaged young people in Lancashire. The stories will be performed and the audience will have the opportunity to interact with the innovative phygital (physical-digital) artefacts that have been created to tell the stories in community locations.<\/p>\n

Breaking the language: shameless multilingual authors<\/h2>\n

A group of authors will discuss the (ab)use they inflect upon language. Sometimes, grammatical rules cannot accommodate the variety and richness of our multicultural world, and that is why these authors are shamelessly mixing up vocabularies and structures to show complex and unique characters to their readers. They will share their experience of living surrounded by different languages and how this has affected their creative process. They will also discuss how their original use of language challenges many of the cultural stereotypes associated with genre.<\/p>\n

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight<\/h2>\n

A reading of selections from this famous Arthurian romance in both the original Middle English and contemporary English – and all in the atmospheric tower of Lancaster Castle. \u00a0The performance is devised by Lancaster University scholars Dr Clare Egan and Dr Liz Oakley-Brown.<\/p>\n
