Programme for 2021

This is the draft Programme for the 2021 online version of the Intellectual Party.
The sessions will be held in the afternoon of the UK time zone (UTC+00:00).

Day 1. 5th July 2021

2.00-2.20 Introduction and explanation of the format

2.20-3.20 The object of my PhD.  In this session, small groups of participants will present the ‘object’ of their PhD – they will share the picture of their chosen object and explain how it relates to their current ideas (Groups will be organised by topic).

3.20-3.30 Stretch your legs

3.30-4.30 The positioning exercise.

4.30-5.00 Tricycle chats.  In these sessions, groups of three participants will briefly ‘interview’ each other using a prepared set of questions.

5.00-6.00 Snacks: sharing your favourite snack.  There will be five groups.  In each you get a chance to present and describe your preferred snack.  At the end of the session, the group will choose one snack to go forward to the finale.

Day 2. 6th July 2021

2.00-2.10 Welcome back

2.10-3.00 Poster sessions. In these sessions participants will get a chance to ask questions about the posters that have been prepared by others in their group.

3.00-3.10 Stretch your legs

3.10-4.10 Craft skills: a choice of sessions, ‘Acquiring an Academic Identity’ (Katy Mason); ‘The Life of a Journal Article’ (Elizabeth Shove), ‘Writing the PhD’ (Joanne Wood); ‘Fresh from a PhD Viva’ (Lindsey Hogg) and ‘Research funding and how to get it’ (Claire ODonnell).

4.10-4.40 Tricycle chats. In these sessions, groups of three participants will briefly ‘interview’ each other using a prepared set of questions.

4.40-4.50 Another stretch of the legs

4.50-5.50 Three minute thesis competition, in which entrants describe their thesis in three minutes and in which there are prizes for those who most are most convincing, interesting and effective.

Day 3. 7th July 2021

2.00-2.10 Welcome back

2.10-3.00 Reading the abstracts.  In which small groups read and discuss each other’s abstracts.

3.00-3.10 Stretch your legs
