I am in charge of the German coins, and let me tell you, there are A LOT of really interesting coins from the 1914-1918 period. Worse, we are meant to be showing the change that occurred, so we also had to look through the coins and notes from directly before and after WW1. This was a lot of coins to fit into a fairly small\u00a0case with coins from two other countries. I hope to explain the coins we chose after the display is installed so I won\u2019t spoil which ones ended up making the cut (you can wait till the end of April to either read this blog or visit the Harris and see it in person!).<\/p>\n<p>Below are 2 coins that I found very interesting but that sadly did not quite make the cut.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/100-mark.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-13\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/100-mark-297x300.jpg\" alt=\"100 mark\" width=\"297\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/100-mark-297x300.jpg 297w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/100-mark-1014x1024.jpg 1014w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/100-mark-50x50.jpg 50w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/100-mark.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The first is a\u00a0<strong>Westphalia inflation issue emergency token<\/strong>, which was called a \u2018notgeld\u2019 in Germany. This particular coin was worth 100 marks, and it was produced in 1923.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What is strange about this coin, other than the fact that it was made by a specific part of Germany, and was worth 100 marks!, is the figure on it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/coin-with-woman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/coin-with-woman-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"coin with woman\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The woman is\u00a0<strong>Annette von Droste-Hulshoff,<\/strong>\u00a0and she was a 19th century German poet and author.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a portrait of Annette von Droste-Hulshoff, looking very dignified:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/Annette-von-Droste-Hulshoff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/Annette-von-Droste-Hulshoff-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"Annette von Droste-Hulshoff\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/Annette-von-Droste-Hulshoff-243x300.jpg 243w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/Annette-von-Droste-Hulshoff.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"fn value\"><span class=\"fn\"><i>Portrait of Annette von Droste-H\u00fclshoff<\/i><\/span> by Johann Joseph Sprick (1808\u20131842)http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Droste-H%C3%BClshoff_2.jpg<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She wrote\u00a0<em>Die Judenbuche<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The Jew\u2019s Beech<\/em>) in 1842, which may have been one of the world\u2019s first murder mysteries. She also had an unfinished tragedy called\u00a0<em>Berta<\/em>\u00a0oder die Alpen (\u201c<em>Berta<\/em>, or The Alps\u201d), in which she wrote: \u201cToo manly is your spirit, striving far too high into heights where no woman\u2019s eye can follow. It\u2019s this that constricts your breast with such anxiety and makes your youthful cheeks grow pale. If women climb beyond their sphere, they flee their own, better selves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The second coin was made by the<strong>city of Hamburg in 1902<\/strong>. What was interesting about this coin was, first, it was made by a city before WW1, and, two, the design was amazing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/five-marks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/five-marks-300x153.jpg\" alt=\"five marks\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/five-marks-300x153.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/five-marks-1024x521.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/heritage-placements\/files\/2015\/03\/five-marks.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just look at that eagle!<\/p>\n<p>The reason why an individual town was making its own money at this time was probably tied to Hamburg\u2019s place within the\u00a0<em>Hanse,<\/em>\u00a0a reference to the Early Modern\u00a0<strong>Hanseatic League\u00a0<\/strong>that Hamburg along with many other market towns\u00a0along the coast of Northern Europe.
