About the contributors

Johnny Unger

Johnny Unger (also known as Johann Wolfgang Unger in publications) is a lecturer in the department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University, where he teaches and researches discourse studies. His research is mainly related to language and digitally mediated politics. He is co-author of the textbook Researching Language and Social Media: A Student Guide (Page, et al. 2022) and has recently published a chapter on ‘Digitally Mediated Communication’ in Researching Discourse (Hart 2020). His work on gender stereotypes in Shrek (with Jane Sunderland) looks at how the film challenges but also confirms gendered stereotypes (Unger & Sunderland 2007). His favourite character from an animation is Merida from Brave, and his favourite animated film is, unsurprisingly, Shrek.

 

Onyx Wood

Onyx Wood is a research intern and undergraduate studying Linguistics and Chinese at Lancaster University. He is especially interested in multilingualism, as well as its impact on cultural understandings of personal and collective identity. His favourite character in animation is Alucard from Castlevania and his favourite animated film is Ponyo!

Ellie Leatherby

Ellie Leatherby is a former research intern and undergraduate studying Linguistics at Lancaster University. She particularly enjoys speech and phonetics, as well as the impact sociolinguistic factors can have on accent and dialect. Her favourite character in animation is Korra from The Legend of Korra and her favourite animated Film is Spirited Away!

 

Hanaka Peers
Hanaka Peers is a former research intern and undergraduate studying English Language and Literature at Lancaster University. Her favourite linguistic fields involve conversation, pragmatics, and discourse analysis – especially when it concerns the relationship between gender and language. She loves studying motifs, and endlessly obsessing over character writing and world lore. Two of her favourite animated films are Kung Fu Panda 2 and The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Her favourite animated character is currently Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

 

Vicky Strong

Vicky Strong is a former research intern and undergraduate studying English Language and Literature at Lancaster University. She has a keen interest in multimodal discourse analysis, particularly in its relation to gender construction in visual communication. Her favourite character from an animation is Kronk from The Emperor’s New Groove and her favourite animated film is The Princess and the Frog!

 

Jasmin Awoodun

Jasmin Awoodun is a former research intern and undergraduate studying English Language and Creative Writing at Lancaster University. Along with phonetics, one of her main interests is conversational analysis, particularly related to the effects of identity on language use. Her favourite character from an animation is Baymax from Big Hero 6, and among her favourite animated films are Coraline and Spirited Away, although she would find it impossible to choose between them!
