FASS Internship Success Story – An interview with Rebecca Lockwood

Hello 🙂 ! Meet Rebecca –

Rebecca is a 3rd year English Literature and Creative Writing Student and an Editor-in-Chief of The Lancaster Tab. She secured a job as a Communications Manager at Support the Goals. Support the Goals is an initiative which raises awareness of the Global Goals, promotes a structured approach to their planning and target setting, whilst providing young people with work experience in corporate sustainability.

Rebecca secured this job after a successful completion of a 3-month internship during a 2nd term of her 3rd year. Her path started through one of the modules which aimed to get English students work experience. On question about what she has learned from this experience, she said that it was surprising how much she enjoyed working in corporate communications: ‘It wasn’t something that I have done before, whole world of emails and corporate meetings’. Rebecca really enjoyed learning new things, especially on sustainable development and working alongside people which are passionate about their work.

For the question on ‘how has this experience changed your approach to your future career’ Rebecca told us that she went into her placement because she loved writing. However, she didn’t know how to generate income as a writer. Prior to this experience she had a set career goal to become a journalist, however just halfway through her placement her opinion has switched. This experience allowed her to discover different career routes, which involve writing.

A word of advice from Rebecca – ‘Number one thing, do not underestimate your skill set’. We agree with this advice, involvement in different experiences such as part time jobs, societies, internships and volunteering can help you to find new career paths, further develop and showcase your skillset.

We are very happy to see Lancaster University Arts and Social Sciences Faculty students sharing such great news. We hope you can get an inspiration from it, the importance of staying open minded about your future careers, trying different experiences and doing things which you love to do. We wish Rebecca best of luck with her final year assessments and in her future career path!
