FASS Internship – Universal Learning Solutions Project Intern

Location: Based in our Lancaster office with potential travel in the UK during events.

Start date: Early September

Hours: 1 – 2 days per week

Rate of pay: £9.20 including holiday pay

Mission and Background

Universal Learning Solutions is a UK-based not-for-profit organisation whose vision is of a world where all children can read and write with confidence and enjoy their right to learn. To work towards this vision, Universal Learning Solutions partners with governments, donors and educators in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia and Cameroon to deliver innovative literacy programmes using the synthetic phonics approach.

Our work enables and enthuses teachers to deliver high quality literacy tuition and builds the institutional capacity of partners through knowledge and skills transfer. This gives children of all abilities the skills needed to read and write and helps governments meet their global education targets.

Primary Role

Universal Learning Solutions has a small UK team based in Lancaster as well as offices in Portugal and Spain. We also have a strong team of trainers, academics and project managers across Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya. We now have exciting opportunities for students and interns with an interest in international development and education.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-growing organisation, helping to transform the literacy levels of millions of children in low-income countries. The Project Intern will help enable government schoolchildren in Nigeria, and beyond, to read and write through supporting the implementation of our state and national-level literacy projects.

This internship will provide an opportunity to gain valuable experience in the international development sector, specifically increasing their knowledge and understanding of education projects in developing countries.

The successful candidates will provide essential support to our team of project managers in a variety of the following duties.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Project and programme support
  • Research into country education programmes
  • Report writing
  • Data entry
  • Phone calls and batch SMS to government primary school teachers in the developing world
  • Data analysis
  • Supporting with project monitoring and evaluation
  • Education material development
  • Events planning and coordination
  • General administration

Qualifications and Experience

We will require candidates to be qualified in the majority of points below:

  • Strong teamwork, coordination and planning skills
  • Able to deal effectively with deadlines
  • Strong cultural awareness and the ability to communicate well with people from different cultures
  • Interest in international development and/or education
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Understanding or experience of project management including budget management, project planning, monitoring and evaluation
  • Strong MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other computer skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and fluency in English
  • Experience of, or passion for working on projects supporting development in low-income countries.
