📣 Placement Year sign up deadline extended to Monday 28th January! 📣

We know it’s a hectic time of year, so we’ve given you all an extra week to register interest in the Placement Year.

A placement year (sometimes known as a sandwich year, or year in industry) is a year of professional paid employment which you can add to your degree, extending your degree from three years into a four year programme. A variety of Placement year roles are available in companies (large and small) across many different areas of industry.

Undertaking a placement year will give your employment prospects a huge boost, and it will also allow you the chance to get a head start working in the type of environment that you might be considering for after you graduate. Our placements team will show you where to look for placement opportunities and how to approach companies you wish to work with.

As with any job, a placement year job is a competitive process and the application process varies between different companies and different types of position. The great news is that we provide support in all aspects of the application process from writing your CV to preparing for an interview. We also circulate a weekly list of national placement year job vacancies!

Whatever your role and whoever your employer, you will be doing a real, responsible job – with all the satisfaction that brings. You’ll be paid a salary and you’ll also remain a Lancaster University student and thus still eligible for a student loan and other benefits. You will be fully supported by university staff throughout your placement and you will complete preparatory and reflective modules that will connect your placement to the wider degree programme.

Upon your return you will appreciate far better the connections between theory and practice and it’s almost certain that your final-year studies will be stronger as a result. This is an exciting opportunity to build up experience and transferable skills, as well as make contacts with potential employers.

Please read the attached FAQ list for essential information. You can read about some of our placement students’ experiences here!

To register interest, please send a 500 word statement titled ‘What I hope to gain from a placement year’, to fassplacements@lancaster.ac.uk – the deadline is Monday 28th of January
